Science News

Year 11 Biology have continued learning about body systems, moving on from the Digestive System to the Circulatory System. Yesterday they got to see a set of lungs get inflated and observe how the heart sits under the left lung.

They then undertook a dissection of a sheep heart to examine the various structures such as the Aorta, Left and Right Artia and Ventricles as well as measuring the wall thickness of each side. The class did well and this wraps up our dissections for the moment.

Well done class on smashing the practical component of the course.

Year 12 Biology

On Thursday the 12th of June, Year 12 Biology students braved the cold and the roadworks to travel to UNE in Armidale for the HSC Booster Day.

In the first session, students used polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and electrophoresis to solve a crime using DNA, with the results clearly showing that Suspect 2, ‘Colonel Custer’ was the culprit.

After a short break, the students moved on to the second session on infection and immunity. Here, students donned their plastic aprons and gloves and learnt how to prepare a slide with a blood sample, then compared their results with examples already under the microscopes.
