Library News

It’s hard to believe that it is already the month of June, we are becoming familiar with the crisp icy mornings and students rugged up in their winter uniforms including their woollen scarves. As the weather gets colder, we are continuing to provide a warm and inclusive environment for students to gather in. Recently we have had an informative display for the National Reconciliation Week and displays for Careers and Languages Week.

50th Anniversary Display of photos and memorabilia

The very creative team of Donna Davidson and Erin Gaze have been collating and displaying photos and memorabilia in the library for the 50th Anniversary of Marist Sion College. There are a large number of staff and student photos on the walls in the library, attracting a lot of attention and comments. Photos of all of the College principals from 1975 to the present day are also on display. There are some old trophies and photos of the school grounds, before many of the buildings (including the Primary school) were planned!

Library clubs

A highlight of this semester has been the student led and run ‘clubs’ at lunchtimes. We have had the Crochet club on Mondays and Thursdays, led by Jorja. With a large number of students and staff coming to learn about crocheting and create squares for a blanket. We would appreciate any donations of wool, yarn and crochet or knitting needles.

The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) club led by Veronica has been well attended with Lego challenges and interesting videos. There are plans for other student-led clubs running during the term, promoting socialising and ways to interact with new friends.

Professional Learning Opportunity

Jo Keating recently had the opportunity to tour the libraries of Geelong Grammar, Geelong College and Clonard College (see photo below) in Geelong as part of the ASLA – Australian School Library Association. As well as the informative and insightful tours, she was able to participate in a range of workshops over two days – with topics ranging from Digital and Media literacy to Unlocking the creative voices- by teaching poetry and writing to students.

HOW TO STUDY FOR TESTS AND EXAMS

Knowing how to study effectively for tests and examinations is a skill that is essential not just for school but for lifelong learning. The study skills handbook site (www.studyskillshandbook.com.au) has lots of extra information and activities for you to complete to help you build your skills for school. All students have access to the handbook via the Simon site.

Please ask the friendly library staff if you would like more details or assistance. https://www.studyskillshandbook.com.au/

As we contend with the cold wintery weather, we would like to remind parents and students that the library is open from 8:00am and closes at 4:30pm (Mon – Thurs), 4:00pm on Fridays. There are always Learning Support Officers available to assist with homework after school, and it is an inclusive, warm and welcoming space.
