In Our Classrooms

Book Week & Book Fair

A huge thank you to everyone who made our Book Fair and Book Week Parade such a success! We are so grateful to our wonderful volunteers and families for their support at the Fair. Your time and energy helped create a fantastic event for our school community.

A special shoutout to all the families and students who went above and beyond to organise such creative and colourful costumes for the parade. It was a joy to see our College come alive with characters from every corner of the literary world!

Congratulations also to our talented book design winners — their amazing artwork is proudly displayed in the PY Learning Lab for all to admire.

Year 5 Cyber Safety Incursion

This week, our Year 5 students participated in a ThinkUKnow incursion presented by the Victorian Police. The program focused on developing students’ critical thinking skills to help them recognise unsafe situations online and make safe, informed choices when using technology.

During the session, students explored important topics including protecting their personal information and privacy, identifying inappropriate or unsafe online behaviours, and understanding the importance of respectful interactions in digital spaces. They were also encouraged to practise help-seeking behaviours, learning where and who to go to if they ever feel unsafe or unsure online.

The session was interactive and engaging, allowing students to ask questions and reflect on how to apply these strategies in their everyday lives. This valuable learning opportunity has helped equip our Year 5 students with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the online world more safely and responsibly.

Year 5 Sport

Each Wednesday afternoon, the Year 5 students participate in Year 5 Sport. This program gives students the chance to be active, build teamwork skills and enjoy a range of games such as dodgeball, netball and soccer. Each week they verse a house colour team, allowing them to experience friendly competition in a supportive environment.

Students can also earn points by showing our College values of Respect, Resilience, Responsibility and Relationships, both on and off the field. These values help guide how they play, communicate and encourage one another. To show their school spirit, students are welcome to wear their HGC-approved sports tops on these days.

Year 4 Explanation Text Expo

This term, our Year 4 students have been learning how to write explanation texts using different structures: sequential, causal, and cyclical. To practise these skills, they have enjoyed hands-on activities such as making fairy bread, creating grass heads, and designing their own board games, which they then explained in writing. Now, students are ready to take the next step by creating their own explanation text on a topic of their choice. These will be proudly shared at our Year 4 Explanation Text Expo on Wednesday, 10th September, at 2:00 pm in our classrooms, where parents are warmly invited to come along and celebrate the students’ learning.

Kids First

This week, some of our Year 6 classes completed their final session of the Kids First All About Safety program. Students learnt about staying safe online and explored strategies to monitor their own safety while help-seeking.

To conclude the program, students investigated how their bodies respond to risky situations by identifying their individual warning signs. To experience this in a fun and engaging way, they played the game Pie Face, where volunteers tested themselves in a light-hearted “risky” situation.

Year 4 Hoop Time Basketball Event – A Slam Dunk Day Out!

Wednesday 20 August | Mill Park Stadium

On Wednesday, 20 August, 50 enthusiastic Year 4 students from Hazel Glen College proudly represented the school at the Hoop Time Basketball event held at Mill Park Stadium.

Six teams took to the courts throughout the day, including three Rookie Teams who showed great teamwork and determination in their games. It was a fantastic opportunity for students of all skill levels to get involved, learn, and have fun in a spirited and supportive environment.

The day was a huge success, with all students giving their best effort and demonstrating excellent sportsmanship. A special congratulations goes to three of our teams who qualified for the Regional Finals – the All Star Boys, All Star Girls, and Future Star Boys. This is an outstanding achievement and a reflection of the hard work and commitment from both the players and their coaches.

We’re incredibly proud of everyone who took part in the event and thank the staff, parents, and volunteers who helped make the day run so smoothly. Good luck to our qualifying teams as they prepare for the next stage! Go Hazel Glen!
