Years F & 1

We have been busy working away with addition and subtraction in maths. Students were using a number line to practise getting to their answers. They also learnt a new game called ‘Kaboom’. They had to select an icy pole stick and answer either the addition or subtraction question with their number line. If they selected a stick with the word kaboom on it they had to give back all there sticks. They loved the game and are often asking to play which is always nice. This week we have been looking at shapes and location. Students have to listen to a range of instructions and select the correct shape and place it in the correct position. Through listening to the instructions they all created something different.

In writing we have been talking about adjectives. Students had to select a noun and write it down, then use a adjective to describe it. Afterwards they had a go at putting it in a sentence. I’m impressive with how they are developing confidence with what adjectives are and what role they play.

This week was by far one of my favourite humanities lessons. This term we have been looking at Australia and its location. Students brought in pictures of different places they had been on holidays within Australia and we had a go at mapping it out. It was really fun talking about where some of the students had been and working out where they are located in Australia.

In arts over the past couple of weeks we have been looking at and painting trees. Our first tree painting idea came from the story ‘Old Pig’ by Margaret Wild.  We looked at the image where the tree was reflecting on the water. We folded our piece of paper in half and painted our tree, then printed it to create a reflection. They came up incredibly and the students did a wonderful job of colours and shape. We then had a go at painting a tree on paper to experiment and then week we used aluminium foil to paint our tree on. Students were able to notice the difference in painting on different materials.
