Duke of Edinburgh's International Award: Annual Report

This year, Kellyville High School proudly celebrates a decade of delivering the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. Since its inception, our program has grown into a vibrant and respected part of school life, fostering 53 Bronze and 27 Silver. Most impressive were the 6 Gold Award students: Savannah J., Meha P., Brooke T., Lucas P., Zhi Yong P. and Phoenix B.

Since the start of 2016 we have completed an incredible thirty-three Adventure Journeys across some of Australia’s most iconic landscapes. From the forests of Wollemi, the escarpments of the Blue Mountains and the alpine peaks of Kosciuszko National Park, our participants have embraced challenge, personal growth and the spirit of adventure.

In 2025, two outstanding Adventure Journeys shaped the year: a return to the Coxs River in the Blue Mountains and a demanding expedition to Gungartan in Kosciuszko National Park. These journeys highlighted the core purpose of the Award—preparation, perseverance and learning through experience. Whether building fitness, selecting the right equipment, practising safety skills or making good nutritional choices, each student discovered that growth happens when we push beyond comfort and commit to the process.

The year concluded with an unforgettable four-day expedition into the alpine wilderness north of Guthega Power Station. Students spent their first night at Horse Camp Hut before ascending Mount Gungartan (2,068m) on day two—a challenging climb rewarded with breathtaking views. A cold night at Schlink Hut provided a moment for reflection on resilience, perspective and the power of preparation. The final camp at White River Hut allowed students to explore the Granite Peaks and The Rolling Ground, completing more than 55 kilometres of hiking with 18-kilogram packs and over 1,700 metres of climbing. These were not easy kilometres, but they were incredibly rewarding ones.

Sir Edmund Hillary once wrote, “It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.” Our students learned just that. Resilience does not appear in moments of comfort; it is forged in cold mornings, steep climbs and the decision to keep going when it would be easier to stop. Every student returned not only with memories, but with a deeper sense of confidence—confidence earned through effort, reflection and growth. The Award teaches participants to analyse their weaknesses, celebrate small successes and persist with purpose. These are life skills that will serve them well long after the pack is off their shoulders.

As we look ahead, we are delighted to announce that Ms. Matley will take on the role of Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator in 2026. Her enthusiasm, experience and genuine care for young people make her an outstanding leader for the next chapter of the program. We thank all staff, parents and students who contributed to another exceptional year of challenge, achievement and adventure.

Here’s to another decade of growth, resilience and unforgettable journeys at Kellyville High School.

Year 5 Gala Day

Our recent Year 5 Gala Day was a fantastic experience that brought energy, teamwork and plenty of smiles to our school community. Hosted and organised by our Year 10 students, the day was packed with fun activities that kept everyone engaged from start to finish.

The Year 5 students rotated through a variety of exciting events, including Pickleball, Minute to Win It challenges and a fast-paced Trivia competition. Each activity was well run and thoughtfully planned, giving the younger students a chance to try new games, work together and enjoy some friendly competition.

A huge congratulations and acknowledgement to the wonderful Year 10 students for their hard work, organisation and maturity. For at least a term in the lead up to the event, they demonstrated excellent leadership skills in developing their stalls, coordinating the events, explaining rules clearly and supporting the Year 5 students throughout the day. Their positive attitudes and enthusiasm helped create a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere. There was nothing but praise for Year 10 from the visiting students and staff from our partner primary schools.

Overall, the Year 5 Gala Day was a wonderful success and a great example of older students leading by example. Year 10 were able to raise $1890 for their charity Beanies for Brain Cancer. Well done to everyone involved!

Orientation Day

The start of high school was marked by an unforgettable Orientation Day, filled with excitement, creativity, and teamwork. Students jumped right in, practicing greetings in Japanese, playing word games like Boggle in English, and designing their own keychains in TAS. Science experiments sparked curiosity, while music sessions introduced keyboard skills and drumming patterns. Art classes gave students the chance to express themselves through painting, and drama games encouraged confidence and collaboration. The IEF was alive with music and interactive activities, while sports games and a mini Olympics challenge brought plenty of energy to the day. Students also took time to reflect by writing letters to their future selves. To top it all off, everyone enjoyed the classic sausage sizzle and refreshing ice blocks. The laughter, smiles, and teamwork made Orientation Day a true success, setting the stage for a fantastic year ahead!

Talent Quest 2025

The annual Talent Quest was more than a competition — it was a vibrant celebration of creativity, courage, and community. Every act brought something unique to the stage, ensuring the audience was constantly surprised and delighted.

It was the yo-yo performance that left the crowd in awe. With lightning-fast spins, dazzling tricks, and jaw-dropping precision, a simple toy was transformed into a breathtaking art form that had everyone gasping and applauding.

Comedy acts kept the atmosphere buoyant, with clever jokes and sharp timing that filled the hall with laughter and gave the day a playful edge.

Musicians showcased their artistry through guitar and drum solos that added depth and variety, reminding everyone of the dedication behind their craft.

Singers poured emotion into every note, whether belting out pop hits or delivering soulful ballads, their voices resonating powerfully and captivating the audience.

And of course, the band’s electrifying energy set the tone for the entire event, igniting excitement that carried through every performance.

By the final bow, it was clear: our students are brimming with talent and flair, and the Talent Quest will be remembered as a day where creativity truly shone.

Environment Club

The Dharug peoples, on whose land we meet, have always shared a profound and enduring connection to their environment, grounded in a deep understanding of land, ecosystems, and natural resources. This connection extends beyond culture alone; it reflects a holistic worldview that integrates spirituality, traditional knowledge, and sustainable practices, reinforcing the importance of living in balance with nature.

For many Aboriginal communities, the environment is not simply a backdrop for human activity, but a living source of identity, knowledge, and sustenance. Beliefs emphasise the interdependence of all living things, recognising that every element of the natural world—from the smallest plant to the largest animal—plays a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. Knowledge passed down through Elders guides sustainable land-care practices, ensuring resources are used respectfully and preserved for future generations.

Recognising and respecting connections to Country is not only about honouring the world’s oldest continuing cultures; it is essential to the ongoing wellbeing of our planet.

A huge thank you to the members of the Environmental Club who generously gave their time this year. The Club continues to grow in both numbers and enthusiasm, empowering students to learn how meetings run, how committees function, and how meaningful projects are planned and implemented. We welcome students from all year groups. Make the Club your own—find a cause you care about and be passionate.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”— Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

Together, we continue to make a positive impact on our planet—one small action at a time.
