Beach Mindfulness Excursion!

We have many students who regularly join me for our Mindfulness Meditation Lunchtime Club on a Wednesday in the hall.  Mindfulness takes training and practice, so to reward the regular attendees, I will take a small group to the front beach (near The Baths) next Wednesday 14th May from 1.40-2.20pm (weather permitting).  We will participate in a Beach Meditation and a Mindful Grounding Walk. Please email me on jennyt@sjsorrento.catholic.edu.au if you would especially like your child to be a part of this short lunchtime activity.  The Incidental Excursions Form completed earlier this year will cover your child for this exercise, so no Operoo will be necessary.

Encouraging INDEPENDENCE in your child

I was recently having a coffee with a friend and her 3 year old boy, when he asked her for a snack.  She paused  and said,“How about YOU find it in the bag?”

And he did. He found his snack. I commented to her that it was great that she gave him the opportunity!

The truth is, we often jump in to help our kids—not because they can’t do it, but because it feels easier to just do it ourselves.  But when we do that, we miss little chances to build their confidence.

That one small moment of “you try first” can lead to so much more.  Could your child slice the bananas for their morning smoothie? Feed the family pet? Fill their own water bottle?

They don’t have to do it perfectly and it might get messy. But that’s not the point. These small, everyday moments are where independence starts. Every time we step back and let them try, we’re helping them grow into capable, confident humans.

For more tips on encouraging independence, check out this week’s parenting guide!

By taking a step back and allowing your child to take on more responsibility, you're helping them to develop important life skills and building their confidence towards becoming independent adults.

So take a breath, be patient and give your child the freedom to try, to fail and to succeed on their own terms!
