Senior Years Report

  Year 12 English Protest Incursion

Year 12 English students are currently writing creatively about the topic of ‘protest’. To support their idea generation and writing skills, we invited Eagles’ Nest Theatre Company on site to perform protest texts and engage students in activities to get them thinking more deeply about protest. Here’s what students had to say:

From the presentation I learnt a lot of things I didn't expect to learn, especially how even ideas you might think are bad can still spiral into something deep and intricate. I feel that this practice of expanding on even your 'bad' ideas can help develop intricate themes that carry over to ideas that you think are good. I also liked their suggestion of switching point of view/character whilst staying in the same world/topic as it felt like the words carried more development of the world without actually saying more, essentially each word expressed a deeper sense of world building. These ideas have already helped me with my writing in things that I struggled quite a bit with, for example the clarity of my sentences.

I enjoyed the different approaches to writing that Helen and James shared (expression, reflection etc). Writing with a passion can help better your overall writing. I would recommend this for next year's cohort as it may help them better their writing skills and open their eyes to different ways to write a creative piece.
