Celebrating National Careers Week with St Anne’s College alumni
It is fantastic to see our St Anne's College alumni thriving in their chosen career pathways.
That's exactly what happened when 2024 Year 12 Graduate Charli stopped in for a visit. She is back in Shepparton for the Continuity of Care (CCE) placement, as part of her Bachelor of Midwifery at Australian Catholic University (ACU). This will be one of Charli’s first exposures to the pregnancy to birth process.
The CCE gives students the opportunity to experience continuity with individual women through pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period. The CCE enables an ongoing relationship between the student midwife and the mother, from the initial contact in pregnancy through to the weeks immediately after the woman has given birth, across community and hospital settings. The student acts as support person for the mother and her partner, or those close to her, under supervision from their chosen healthcare provider (midwife, obstetrician, or GP).
We embrace and celebrate the career journeys of our past students, particularly when they bring their learning back into the local community.
We wish Charli all the best for her upcoming placement at the Royal Women’s Hospital in June.
All the action from Careers Week!
It has been an exciting and productive few weeks in the Careers Department as students across the senior secondary school participated in range of opportunities to explore potential career pathways and engage with industry professionals, in honour of 'National Careers Week (12-18 May)'.
On Thursday 8 May our Year 10 students attended the Careers Day Out in Shepparton. This event offered them the chance to connect directly with representatives from universities, TAFE institutions, local industries, employment and apprenticeship providers, emergency services, and the defence force. A range of interactive, hands-on activities were available, including pedal-powered smoothie making, bricklaying, and light switch wiring. Students also enjoyed tasting locally produced cheese and protein bars - a delicious bonus!
On Wednesday 15 May our Year 11 cohort travelled to Melbourne to attend the Victorian Careers and VCE Expo. This major event enabled students to connect with over 200 tertiary and pathway providers, as well as the opportunity to attend information seminars focused on Unit 3 & 4 subjects and exam preparation. Plenty of merchandise and sweet treats were on offer for students who actively engaged with stallholders and exhibitors.
On Friday 9 May our Year 12 VCE students attended the Tertiary Information Session (TIS), where they gained valuable insights into the VTAC application process, including how to apply for SEAS (Special Entry Access Scheme). Students also had the opportunity to speak directly with representatives from major universities and TAFE providers, helping them to make more informed decisions about their post-secondary pathways.
Continuing the momentum, on Monday 19 May, three students with aspirations in nursing visited La Trobe University’s local campus to be a 'Nursing Student for a Day'. They participated in engaging activities such as CPR races and blood pressure monitoring. The highlight of the day was working with 'Andrais' - the simulated patient in the on-campus hospital room, where students practiced taking vital signs in a realistic clinical setting.
Hear from student Charlie Ratcliffe about the experience:
"On Monday the three of us went down to La Trobe University to get an overall gauge on what uni would be like as a nursing student. From this experience we got to learn about the work load, different pathways into university and got to engage with the real life dummies by taking vitals. We all learnt so much from this experience and each feel more directed in our pathways for our future. Our favourite thing about the day was measuring the blood pressure from the dummies and performing CPR. "
Also on 19 May we welcomed the CitiPower/Powercor Roadshow to the College. Representatives spoke with our VCE VM students about the diverse range of career opportunities available across regional Victoria in the clean energy and sector.
We’re proud of the enthusiasm and curiosity shown by our students during these events and look forward to supporting them on their career exploration journeys throughout the year.
