Year Three - Spotlight on Learning

Ephesus Community

Dear Families,

This week we had the joy of being able to celebrate our mum’s, grandmother’s, aunties and the special woman in our lives.

We wish you all a very special Mother’s day on Sunday.

Much love to you all,

This week in our learning...

Maths

We are continuing our learning to identify and write unit fractions of shapes. Students were  asked to design flags that show thirds, quarters, fifths or tenths dividing their flags into equal parts and writing the fractions to show how much of the flag is each colour.

English

We worked on our first paragraph of the History of the Aboriginal Flag. We wrote about a Gurindji man from Northern Territory, Vincent Linguari. He was Aboriginal rights activist demanding better wages and the return of their ancestral land. Students also wrote sentences with the conjunctions ‘because’, ‘but’ and ‘so’ and wrote complex sentences

using subordinating conjunctions (connecting sentences).

Religious Education

We are learning how Jesus is like a Good Shepherd who knows and cares for each one of us and we spoke about how it feels to be seen and loved, like sheep in a shepherd’s care. We also kept going with  our self reflections on how we are pilgrims of hope who listens to and follows Jesus’ voice.

Integrated Studies

We are learning to identify key events that happened when Aboriginal Australians first met Europeans and discussed how these events changed people’s lives. We came to know that people in the past had different points of views compared to those of today.

AUSLAN

Did you know that In AUSLAN, the direction of our eyebrows will tell us if a person is asking an open question  (with many responses) or a closed question (short or one word responses)? Looking at the signer's eyebrows going up means it is a closed question.

Social/Emotional Learning & RRRR

This week we looked at problem solving. A problem is a situation that requires people to put in some effort or care to deal with it well. When solving problems we need to  think if it is an ant problem (a problem I can work out myself) or an elephant problem (I need an adult to help me ). We practiced a strong apology model where we ask/reflect on the following- •I say what I did wrong •I say how I think it made the other person feel •I say how I feel now •I promise to try to not do it again •I say sorry. These are not just school skills, but life skills.
