Year Six - Spotlight on Learning

Bethlehem Community

Dear Families,

What a wonderful week we've had in Year 6!

This week marked the beginning of our swimming lessons, and it was great to see students showing courage, resilience, and enthusiasm in the pool each day. It was so lovely to see so many families join us for our Mother’s Day Breakfast. The morning was filled with smiles, laughter, and warmth as we celebrated the amazing women in our lives. We hope you enjoyed the delicious breakfast and our special song performance—the students were so proud to share it with you. Thank you for making it such a memorable occasion!

This week we learnt about...

Religious Education Focus:

This week students continued to explore the story of Pentecost, looking at how the Holy Spirit influenced the disciples and the early Church.

English Focus:

Reading:

In Reading, we continued our exploration of the novel Us Mob Walawurru. Students are delving deeper into the characters’ experiences, emotions, and perspectives, especially in the context of culture, identity, and connection to Country. They continue to summarise key events and ideas from the chapters they read, identifying the most important information and retelling it in their own words.

Writing:

In Writing, students have been developing their sentence-level writing skills with a focus on creating complex sentences using subordinate conjunctions such as because, although, when, and since. They have also been learning how to write clear topic sentences that introduce the main idea of a paragraph. This week, students planned and wrote the introduction and first paragraph of their factual recount on the 1967 Referendum, incorporating historical facts and structuring their ideas clearly

Mathematics Focus:

This week, students have been learning to work with decimals, focusing on both addition and subtraction. They have been learning to subtract decimals using place value knowledge and partitioning, breaking numbers into smaller parts to make the calculation easier and more accurate. They have also been developing their skills in adding decimals using the vertical algorithm, carefully aligning decimal points to ensure accuracy in their working out

Integrated Studies Focus

We explored the concept of democracy and the purpose of government. Students took part in a Class Election role play, where they wrote and presented speeches for their nominated roles. It was a fun and engaging way to understand civic responsibility!

Social & Emotional Learning Focus

We introduced the concept of self-talk, focusing on how positive self-talk can support our wellbeing and help us make good choices.

Auslan Learning Focus

This week, students delved into Unit 3C, focusing on how to ask open-ended questions in Auslan. They explored how facial expressions—particularly the direction of the eyebrows—can change the meaning of a question. Students learned that raised eyebrows typically signal a closed question, which often requires a short or one-word response

Kind regards,

The Year 6 Team

Reminders:

A reminder that our excursion to Melbourne City will take place on Wednesday 28th May. Students are required to be at school by 8:00am as we will be departing at 8:20am.
