Open Boys Rugby League – Northern NSW Finals
The Open Boys Rugby League team recently travelled to Coffs Harbour to proudly represent the Greater Northern Region in the Northern NSW Opens Schoolboys Trophy. Despite a team made up of five students who don’t currently play rugby league and four Under 16s players, the boys defied expectations and delivered a performance full of heart, grit, and unity.
Their first match was a defensive masterclass against a physically dominant St John’s Woodlawn, ending in a hard-fought 0–0 draw. In their second game against Newman College Port Macquarie, the team’s attacking flair began to shine. With only one try conceded, they surged ahead to a convincing 16-point win.
The final match was a high-stakes clash against fellow Hunter region team, SFX Hamilton, with a spot in the Country Schoolboys Final on the line. Trailing 6–0 at halftime, the boys regathered and were entering the second half with confidence. Unfortunately, an injury caused a significant delay, and after a long day of intense competition, the team couldn’t hold off a strong SFX side, who managed to cross the line again in the second half.
This game was especially meaningful for our Year 12 students, who proudly wore the SJA jersey for the final time. Their leadership, commitment, and passion were evident throughout the day, and they leave behind a legacy of courage and camaraderie.
A special thank you goes to our Under 16s players who stepped up two age groups to compete. They never looked out of place and showed incredible composure and skill—promising signs for the future of our rugby league program.
We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the parents who made the trip to Coffs Harbour and supported the team throughout the day. The support our school rugby league program receives from families is essential to its continued success, and we are truly grateful.
While the result wasn’t what they had hoped for, the boys’ effort, resilience, and sportsmanship was nothing short of inspiring. They represented their school with pride and gave our Year 12s a memorable send-off. We couldn’t be prouder - thanks boys!
