Main Campus - Year 4
Here’s a snapshot of the exciting learning happening in our Year 4 classrooms this term across Reading, Writing, Maths, and Inquiry.
In Reading the Year 4 students are diving into persuasive texts, exploring how authors use language to influence their readers. They’re learning to identify persuasive techniques and understand the author’s point of view, distinguish between facts and opinions by spotting objective vs. subjective language and reflect on how new information from texts can shift their own perspectives.
In Writing, the students are crafting persuasive speeches on environmental issues they care deeply about. Through the writing process, they’re learning to organize their ideas clearly and logically to engage their audience, use persuasive devices such as rhetorical questions, emotive language, alliteration, and relevant facts and opinions. And apply direct and indirect quotation marks in their writing.
In Mathematics they are developing efficient strategies for solving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems. They’re using hands-on materials and digital tools to explore doubling and halving strategies to simplify multiplication, represent problems using arrays, bar models, and diagrams, write and explain number sentences that connect to real-world situations, and apply place value and partitioning to solve problems with confidence.
They will also learn to recognise ways of measuring and approximating the perimeter and area of shapes and enclosed spaces, using appropriate formal and informal units.

This term’s Inquiry focus is on Government and Community & Sustainability. The students are investigating the three levels of government, with a spotlight on the Macedon Ranges Shire Council, exploring the difference between rules and laws, researching local waste management issues and brainstorming solutions and reflecting on their role in the community and how they can contribute positively.
Digital Safety: On Wednesday the 13th, students took part in the eSmart Safety Online program, learning essential skills for staying safe and responsible when using technology.
Book Week Celebration: Next week is Book Week! We’ll be celebrating with a dress-up day on Wednesday the 20th of August. Students are invited to come dressed as their favourite book character—let the literary fun begin!
