Year 5/6 - Senior Unit

Literacy:

Over the past two weeks, students have been analysing and critiquing information texts to identify the effective use of language to engage an audience. Students have also explored how a consistent paragraph structure and the order in which information is presented help create cohesion or a natural flow for the reader. Using a chosen topic they feel confident writing about, students have planned and written an information report using the language and structure analysed through their reading. Students developed their report format by adding visual elements, a glossary of terms used, as well as recording the books or sites used to gather their information. They presented their ideas using the tab function in Google Docs to separate sections of their report or by using a website structure in Google Sites.

Numeracy:

In Numeracy, students have been consolidating their understanding of the links between fractions, decimals and percentages by linking these to the area of probability. They have explored the difference between theoretical probability, which is what we expect to happen based on the number of possible outcomes, and experimental probability, through carrying out chance investigations. Students discussed how they could use their understanding of probability to give them an increased chance of winning a game involving chance.

Inquiry:

Through our Business and Commerce inquiry unit, students have explored the meanings of different types of resources and distinguished between natural, human and capital resources. They have also discussed what factors influence consumers when making choices about what to buy. Students have been learning about the services banks provide to their customers and how the taxation system works in Australia.

During Week 3, 18 of our students competed in the CDSSA Basketball at Sunbury. Both teams placed 3rd, demonstrating excellent sportsmanship throughout the event. We also had the pleasure of experiencing the creative talents of Aiden and Laura during the Kaboom Percussion incursion.

This week, students took part in the eSmart incursion, learning about the factors that influence their digital footprint and how to be safe, smart and responsible online.
