Year One - Spotlight on Learning
Jerusalem Community
Dear Families,
Week 5
We are already halfway through Term 1, and our Year 1 students have been working hard and learning so much! They have been focused and engaged in their lessons, showing great enthusiasm for new challenges. We even had a community assembly and all the students listened attentively. Their efforts in showing our school values every day make us very proud. Keep up the fantastic work, Year 1!
Religious Education focus:
Students created a tree based on the parable The Mustard Seed in Matthew 13:31-32. They added leaves that represented kind things that they have done during the week.
He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”
Students also dressed up in bright colours this Thursday to raise funds for Sister Julie's repatriation. The reason behind this was that she loved bright colours and was always such a beacon of joy in our school community. She will be greatly missed.
English focus:
We read the book Family Tree by Josh Pyke and Ronojoy Ghosh. Students discussed how a tree is like a family in that it grows and changes over time.
They also worked on the "th" sound as used in words like thud, thump, thank, and think.
We worked on these words this week. A good idea to revise with students is to ask them what each word means and to make a sentence.
Mathematics focus:
Students learnt how to use a ruler and how to use a number line. They found numbers on different number lines and played games using number lines and dice.
SEL:
In our Social and Emotional Learning lessons, we have been exploring kindness and friendship, and it has been wonderful to see students demonstrating these values in the classroom and the playground.
History: We examined what members are in my family. We created a book where we drew and wrote about the people that are most special to us.
