Well done, team!

We are now well into Term 1, and students across all year levels have been busy engaging in exciting STEM challenges and projects. Here’s a look at what each year level has been working on during Weeks 4 and 5, and a sneak peek at what’s to come.

Prep – Exploring the STEM Design Process

Our Prep students have been introduced to the STEM design process through two hands-on physical science challenges. In Week 4, they created 2D shapes using play dough and sticks, helping them understand structure and shape properties. In Week 5, they took on an exciting engineering challenge by building a flying fox using strings and cardboard tubes. These early experiences are building their understanding of problem-solving, testing, and improving designs. Looking ahead, the next two weeks will focus on chemistry-themed STEM challenges!

Year 1/2 – Exploring Materials and Properties

Students in Year 1/2 have begun their unit on materials and their properties. They explored the concept of properties through a fun hands-on sorting activity, classifying materials by their textures, strengths, and flexibility. They also conducted a waterproof test on various fabrics to see which materials would be most suitable for different purposes. Over the next two weeks, they will begin planning and creating their very own adventure outfit designs, applying their understanding of materials to their creations.

Year 3/4 – Zoo Animal Enrichment Project

Our Year 3/4 students have launched into an exciting project in collaboration with Zoos Victoria! They are designing enrichment items to support the health and wellbeing of zoo animals, with their final designs to be posted on the Fighting Extinction Schools platform, where they will receive feedback from experts at Zoos Victoria. Over the past two weeks, students have been researching their chosen animals to understand their behaviours, habitats, and needs. Next week, they will begin brainstorming creative enrichment ideas and planning their designs.

Year 5/6 – Designing a Sustainable Farm

In Year 5/6, students have started their Sustainable Farm Design unit, blending biological science, environmental awareness, and design thinking. They began by learning about plant adaptations and discussing how these adaptations inform sustainable farming practices. Over the next two weeks, students will dive deeper into sustainable farming methods, including soil health, water management, and crop rotation, before they start planning their own sustainable farm designs.

It’s been fantastic to see our students’ creativity, teamwork, and critical thinking on display across all year levels. We can’t wait to see their innovative ideas come to life in the weeks ahead!
