Senior School

Over the past few weeks students have been focusing on writing narratives.  They have been experimenting with different techniques such as using ‘sizzling starts', 'tightening tension', using dialogues and high-level vocabulary to make their stories interesting. Some of their work has been proudly displayed in their classroom to share with their peers.

At Weeden we are committed to enhancing our teaching and learning through ongoing professional development. This term staff have had two sessions with Dr Peter Liljedahl, best selling author of Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics: 14 Teaching Practices for Enhanced Learning.

Dr. Peter Liljedahl is a professor of mathematics education at Simon Fraser University in Canada. The training focused on creating an optimal environment for processing mathematics by 'meeting learners where they are' and encouraging the practice of critical thinking rather than simply engaging in activities or memorization in the classroom.

In the 5/6 classrooms we implemented some of the learnings from the sessions and an overwhelming majority of students found the new approach both challenging and engaging and were keen to continue to use the approach in the future.
