Grade 3/4 News

Week 6, Term 1

Welcome back to the Grade 3/4 page!

Reminders and Upcoming Events:

What we are learning...

MATHEMATICS

We have continued to work with place value and just this week, we have begun using addidion and subtration as part of our Fluid Mathematics rotations!

Our Applied Mathematics lessons have focused on classifying and using simple angles to design fun play spaces. We're pretty good at identifying right angles, as well learning lots about obtuse, acute, straight and reflex angles!

During our Problem Solving sessions, we had lots of fun using trundle wheels to investigate lengths of our school spaces! We have also used both metre rulers and 30cm rulers to measure the length of items in our classrooms.

LITERACY

Our reading focus for this fortnight has been on analysing texts to identify the author's purpose. We can identify whether the text is to inform, persuade or entertain us. As we read through our class novel, Paper Planes, we are beginning to make some responses to text based on our understandings of the story so far. We will also be reviewing some of the interesting vocabulary that the story uses and considering how we can use wow words in our own writing to improve our work.

We have begun analysing elements of Narrative texts as well as planning and structuring Narrative writing of our own.

SCIENCE

In Science with Miss Ingram, students have explored how heat can be produced in many ways and can move from one object to another (we learnt this pretty quickly when we held an ice cube in our hands!) We have also explored temperature with the use of thermometers! Lastly, we have begun learning about how heat can come from friction, electricity and burning.

Mrs Schulz’ group have been focusing on identifying landmarks and how they change over time. We have investigated Earth’s 4 spheres (hydrosphere, atmosphere, geosphere and biosphere) and their impact on landmarks. We conducted an experiment about how the hydrosphere and atmosphere cause changes to land in the form of weathering, erosion and deposition! We had lots of fun observing these changes on a model!

In 3-4 Daenke, we are studying Chemical Sciences. Students will develop an understanding of the properties of natural and processed materials, and how these influence their use. Students also learn how First Nations Peoples of Australia use their long-standing scientific knowledge of the properties of materials to select and use natural materials available in their Country/Place for many different purposes.

In Miss Mitchell's class, we have been learning all about the life cycles of animals and plants! In particular, students explored the life cycles of frogs, butterflies and ladybugs and considered what it means when an animal goes through 'metamorphosis'. We then made dioramas that displayed each step of their chosen animal's life cycle.

COMMUNITY TIME

Every second Friday, we have enjoyed engaging in a range of fun activities. We get to choose between a physical game, quiet activities or crafting! It is a nice way to spend time with our peer while having fun with a task of our choosing.
