Term 1 Sport Wrap-Up

As we reach the end of Term 1, it’s been a fantastic few weeks of sport at Doncaster Secondary College, with students representing the school across a range of competitions and achieving some outstanding results.

Our Senior Round Robin saw great participation and success, with our Girls Basketball A team taking the win, alongside our Boys Basketball A and C teams. Our Girls Badminton team also came away victorious, while our Boys Badminton teams showcased their skills with three teams competing.

A special mention to our Girls Hockey team—the first senior girls hockey side we’ve had in a few years—who did the school proud with their efforts on the field!

Our Year 7s also had a big day of sports. We fielded teams in Boys Cricket (two teams), Girls Softball, Boys Baseball, Boys Basketball (three teams), Girls Basketball (two teams), Boys Tennis (three teams), and Girls Tennis (one team). It was fantastic to see so many students get involved and show great enthusiasm in their first secondary school sporting event.

Adding to the excitement, the highly anticipated Staff vs Year 12 Volleyball match took place at lunchtime, drawing a massive crowd. The energy in the stadium was electric, with students and staff alike cheering on their teams. In a dominant display, the staff took on and defeated three separate Year 12 teams.

Better luck next time, Year 12s—maybe Term 2 will be your chance for redemption!

With such a strong start to the sporting calendar, we’re looking forward to even more exciting competitions and events in Term 2. Keep an eye out for upcoming inter-school sport, more Staff vs Year 12 challenges and more lunch time events that students can participate in!

Exploring Lifelong Physical Activity in Year 10 and 11 PE

Students in Year 11 Physical Education had the unique opportunity to participate in a Tai Chi incursion led by a Tai Chi master from the local Doncaster community. This experience directly connected with the VCE Physical Education Study Design by broadening students' understanding of alternative ways to engage in lifelong physical activity.

Tai Chi, a practice deeply rooted in cultural and societal traditions, provided students with an engaging way to explore physical movement, balance, and mindfulness while recognising the significance of diverse physical activities in maintaining health and well-being across the lifespan.

Similarly, Year 10 Health and Physical Education and Year 11 Physical Education students enjoyed an excursion to the Doncaster Bowls Club, where they engaged in two hands-on lessons with dedicated volunteers. This experience tied directly into their curriculum studies on lifelong physical activity, highlighting the importance of accessible, community-based recreational opportunities. Students explored how sports like lawn bowls play a crucial role in supporting physical and social well-being, particularly for older adults, reinforcing the value of inclusive physical activities for all stages of life. The students had a fantastic time learning the skills of the game and engaging with members of the local community.

These experiences have provided students with a greater appreciation of physical activity beyond traditional sports, encouraging them to consider various ways to remain active throughout their lives. We are grateful for the support of our local community in making these opportunities possible and look forward to more engaging experiences in the future.
