Learning Conferences: An Opportunity for Growth and Communication -
Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th April
Learning Conferences are a valuable opportunity for students, parents and teachers to come together and discuss the progress made in current topics of study. These conferences allow students to showcase the growth they’ve demonstrated and offer a chance for parents to understand how their child is progressing academically. At the conferences, teachers will focus on the students’ development in their current topic. For students in Year 7 and Year 8, learning pathways may also be referenced, providing further insight into the direction of their academic journey. Students are encouraged to attend the conference with their parents, as this collaborative approach helps foster open communication and understanding of how to best support each student's learning. While conference times are brief, preparation can make them both productive and worthwhile. Parents, students and teachers should come prepared to make the most out of this important discussion.
Suggestions for Preparation:
Bring your child’s report: Having the report in hand will allow you to refer to specific areas of progress and discuss them more effectively.
Make a list of questions: Preparing a list of questions will ensure that important topics are addressed.
Discuss specific concerns in advance: If you have an issue that requires extended discussion, reach out to the relevant Year Level Liaison ahead of time to arrange a separate meeting.
Share relevant information: If family or medical circumstances may be impacting your child’s progress, inform the teachers so they can better support your child’s needs.
Stay focused on progress: Use this time to discuss your child’s academic progress, rather than bringing up unrelated issues or experiences.
Include your child in the conversation: Encourage your child to participate in the discussion, as this will help them take ownership of their learning.
Take notes: Jot down important points and suggestions for follow-up.
Suggested Questions to Ask:
How can my child improve the standard of their work?
How can our family assist the student in reaching their goals?
What strategies does the teacher suggest to help improve student outcomes?
Is my child taking responsibility for homework, classwork and participation in group activities?
After the Conference:
Following the conference, it’s important to reflect on the positive outcomes and focus on actionable steps to address areas for improvement. Make sure to follow through on any suggestions provided by the teachers and reinforce them at home. If you feel the need to further discuss your child’s progress throughout the semester, don’t hesitate to reach out to the appropriate Learning Leader or Year Level Liaison for support.
We look forward to seeing you at the Learning Conferences and working together to support your child’s growth!
