Dear Karoo PS,
Welcome back to Term 3! I hope that you all enjoyed your holiday break and are looking forward to a fun filled term ahead.
As part of our Parent Education Partnership Series (PEPs), we are hosting our Real Schools Facilitator, Shelia Bollard, this week on Wednesday July 31st at 7pm. We invite our school community to come along and engage in a fantastic evening of learning.
Come and join us!!
BUILDING A RESILIENT CHILD
As parents, we all want our children to be resilient. Resilience helps us to deal effectively with the challenges that life throws at us and helps us bounce back from adversity. Its more than dealing with the challenges, as there is also a strong correlation between resilience and being successful, caring and empathetic. These are traits that we want to instill in our own children. This session is designed to support you with raising a resilient child in today’s world. The tips and advice will be practical, easy to implement and immediately useful.

There are a range of different strategies that parents can utilise to reinforce the behaviours that you aim to see at home. Incorporating language that re-affirms the behaviours is one strategy. The article below outlines what priming language is and how standard comments can be reframed to reinforce positive behaviours.
At Karoo Primary School in 2024 began our implementation of School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS). This is an evidence-based framework for Victorian government schools, aimed at creating a positive, safe and supportive learning culture. This term teachers are working on the establishment of a Continuum of Behaviour Support that considers the needs of all students. Our Values of Kindness, Personal Excellence and Tenacity will be at the core of the SWPBS framework. We look forward to sharing more with you in the coming newsletters.
Celebrating the wealth of knowledge and connections in our community is so important. Intergenerational programs not only provide learning opportunities but also benefit the wellbeing of all generations involved through the sharing of stories and experiences and gaining unique insights and wisdom.
At Karoo PS, we have forged connections with Waterford Valley Lakes and on Monday the 22nd of July a group of our year 4 students visited Waterford Valley Lakes Retirement Village to engage in a Tai Chi session with the residents. The students and residents thoroughly enjoyed the session and spending time connecting together. There was lots of sharing of stories, working together to learn new skills and laughter and joy!
Our Year 4 students will continue to visit Waterford Valley Lakes over the reminder of the year to engage in a range of sessions and continue to build relationships and connections and learn from our older generations. Our Year 5 State School Spectacular participants will also have the opportunity to showcase their SSS talents with a performance visit in Term 4.
To continue making connections with a range of generations our Year 4 students are also embarking on a number of visits to our local kindergarten, Murrindal Children and Family Centre, to engage in reading sessions with the 4-year-old kindergarten students. Another way to continue to build positive connections with school and engage in learning together. We look forward to sharing their adventures with you all soon!
I hope that you all have a wonderful fortnight and I look forward to seeing you around our sensational school!
Kind Regards,
Courtney Hoffmann
