Murnong Day
On Friday we celebrated our 14th annual Murrnong day, where the year 7s get to learn and engage with the Murrnong patch along the Birrarung. In the morning we heard from Wurundjeri elder, Uncle Thane as well as Tully Gibbons, Bec Axford and Katrina Larkham.
After the welcome to country ceremony the year 7s came down to the Murrnong patch, where they each got to plant one of 250 indigenous plants, including the Murrnong, the Chocolate lily and Kangaroo Grass (or Baan in native woi-wurrung language). The year 7s learned from our environment captains and club members about the planting and even got to name each of their plants. Later on in the day, the year 7s also attended a workshop about indigenous plants lead by Bec and Tully.
Then on Sunday MGC hosted Tree in partnership with the Australian Conservation Foundation. We were welcomed to country by Wurundjeri elder, Pallyan Hunter, heard from the MGC environment captains and learned about the Birrarung Mural from year 11 student Daisy Daniels. Afterwards we split up into groups and helped plant native trees and other ground cover with the help of our many volunteers. At the end of the event, we all enjoyed a completely plant based barbeque run by our volunteers and MGC staff.
