Model UN (French) Conference
On Friday 26th July, four courageous students (Eve, Anna, Charlotte and Sinead) participated in the model (French) UN conference at the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership.
Why courageous?
The conference is an opportunity for students to discuss and debate the topic of climate change with their peers from schools from all over Victoria. After delivering their position statement to the General Assembly (we were assigned China as our country to represent) and listening to each member country deliver
their own position statements, questions, debate and negotiations followed during which students had to explain, clarify and justify their positions. Difficult enough in English, I think, but the whole conference was undertaken in the French language!
Our students had the chance to put into practice the unit of work on the Environment we had already studied during the year. Significantly, they had to incorporate lots of new diplomatic language and sharpen the language required to negotiate with other countries.
After delivering an excellent position statement in a very poised and mature fashion our students were quick to contribute to the moderated caucus as well as defend themselves from ‘attacks’ from other countries.
All four students demonstrated excellent French skills throughout and represented MGC impeccably, as always. Congratulations on stepping out of your comfort zone and taking up the challenge!

Bonne fête Nationale – Vive la France !
The 14th of July was Bastille day and the french students at MGC celebrated by learning about the significance of this event for the french. It was really interesting learning about Bastille day. We discovered about how Bastille day signifies the day of the storming of the Bastille prison and the beginning of the French revolution. On top of that, we celebrated by enjoying some Gâteaux, which are traditional french cakes, which we had to order in French. It was exciting using French to interact with others. It was a great thing to experience while learning about this French celebration.
