Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport
Last weekend saw Marist travel to Padua College for the local derby round. It is fair to say Marist had a great day. As well as winning all three firsts matches we won the 9A, 10A and 2nds rugby league, tennis 12 wins to 4 losses and basketball 21 wins to 11 losses. Pleasingly the majority of our wins came in the older ages which indicates that our boys get better over time exposed to our coaching and expectations.
This weekend we host Iona College with the senior teams at home. The weekend is starting with the 1st V basketball game at 6:15pm in the Champagnat Centre. With the 1st V bouncing back from a heartbreaker against Villanova to beat Padua comfortably, this is sure to be the event of the term for sport so make sure you get down to the gym and support the boys.
Our tennis boys are progressing well with the 1st IV alongside St Peters as the only undefeated teams after 2 rounds and the 1st XIII produced a remarkable second half to come from 14 points down to win 21-14 against known rugby league school Padua. The
Sports Selections

The selection of teams or individuals for events is taken very seriously by all staff, as is promotion and relegation of players considering the sport specific criteria in addition to ability and skill level, attitude and aptitude and attendance at training and competition.
In relation to player selection the College has clear guidelines for students and parents to follow.

Due to capped numbers, the Track and Field camp will be by invitation only. However, we are pleased to offer additional opportunities for day training sessions and afternoon meets this year.

All our best to Mr Eric Brown (Head of Jumps) who is heading to Paris on Thursday to join his athlete, Tori West. Tori has been in superb form and will represent Australia in the women’s heptathlon. We wish both of them a great Olympics!
Mr Brown is an outstanding coach, and the College is fortunate to have him involved in our program. In 2020, he coached Ash Moloney to a bronze medal in the men’s decathlon at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Ryan Apps - Rugby League Coordinator
What a fantastic 2024 AIC Rugby League season we are having.
On the weekend MCA Rugby League took on our closest neighbours and Rugby League powerhouse Padua.
Though everything didn't go our way we saw some excellent performances by many teams and won more games than we lost. Special mention goes to our Year 9 team who were excellent in the way the constantly fought for their win. This set the tone with the Year 10s overcoming 19 errors and behind on the board to win. A stirring victory against the odds by the 2nd XIII leads us into the main event of two very good 1st teams. The Opens match was a tough encounter that saw Marist trailing by 14 to fight back to eventually win 20-14.
I would like to take the time to thank all of the coaches, assistants, support staff and you, our players, supporters and families. Without all of us working together for a common goal school sport can be very difficult to manage but it was wonderful to see the overwhelming majority on the same page and the results speak for themselves.
A big shout out to all the parents who assisted with boarders transport to and from games and for assisting being touch judges. This is so very much appreciated, it takes a huge workload off the school having to facilitate the boys transport as they all play at different times, not to mention it gives the boys the whole MCA family experience.
1st XIII Recap from Lachie McCall - 1st Rugby League Vice Captain
The 1st match saw some of the best AIC teams play each other when Marist College Ashgrove took on the Confraternity Shield finalist on Saturday. In our previously shortened match against Padua at the Confra we were left with too much to do and no time to do it after falling behind 16-0. Fortunately for us on the weekend we played a longer traditional match which gave us more time to fight it out. Things did not go to script early and we fell behind 14-0 and it felt a little like deja vu. In the face of adversity, the Marist boys knuckled down and decided that they would be the ones who wrote the script of the outcome. Led by some inspirational speeches by captain Jasper Barry we fought as much as we could and clawed our way back into the match. Some inspired runs by Liam Rice and a desperate defence took us to the lead 16-14 with 12 minutes left. To ice the game Lachie Manning climbed over defenders to score out wide and give Marist a well-deserved victory 20-14. A special mention goes to our Captain and leader, Jasper Barry who was a big part of our victory.
Mr Andrew Ward - Director of Tennis
Here is this week’s tennis news.
Our 16 teams took to the courts in hope of keeping their premiership hopes alive.
This week we were all off to play against our close rivals in Padua College. With an anticipated match-up across all year levels Marist was ready to go into battle confident from the great form we have displayed with most of our teams.
Marist I am pleased to announce, coming away with 12 wins and 4 loses. Of these two loses, we were pipped by a countback of one game as we were locked at 4-4 all in both. Close but was not meant to be.
Next week we have the first home game of our season against Iona College.
Recognition for this week I am giving to all the teams still undefeated so far through two rounds.
Congratulations to 5A &5B,6A & 6B, 7B, 8B, 9A & 9b, 10B, 2nd iv and 1st iv Teams.
Players of the week for this round are as follows: Year 5 – Ted Jorgenson, Year 6 – George Padilla, Year 7 – Cooper Chaseling.
Congratulations to all teams on a well-played round of matches.
Our 1st team MVP award for this week went to Hamish Davidson with a comprehensive 6-0 6-0 demolition or the Number two player for Padua.
1st IV - Henry Lambley, Captain of Tennis
This week we went out to Shaw Park Tennis Centre to take on a determined Padua team.
A dominant first two doubles left us 2-0 up. Another outstanding display by Fletcher and Lachie in the reverse doubles and a win by myself and Hamish against a spirited number 1 doubles pairing from Padua left us 4-0 before the singles.
Before I went down in a near two hour, three set battle with Padua’s number one, Hamish got a convincing 6-0, 6-0 win at number two. In the number three singles, Fletcher faced a gritty, powerful player but eventually outclassed him to record a 7-5, 6-3 win. In a similar match, Lachie managed to win 6-1, 6-4 at number four.
This performance left us with another strong win, 7-1, giving us a strong start to the season. For his performance on the day, Hamish is the MVP of Round 2.
Next week we play our first home game of the season against a highly talented team in Iona where we aim to keep this good form up and hope as many of you as possible can come down to watch us play.
Reminder for all AIC training
Students are to please notify us well in advance if unable to play on Saturday for the school. This gives us time to find a new player so that we do not have to forfeit sets and ultimately have that team lose on the day.
All students must wear the correct uniform to train and for Saturday matches. This is across all sports played throughout the year.
Please be on time for training in the mornings. We want all students to arrive as a team, warm up as a team, and play together as a team. Not a good look turning up 10 minutes late and disrupting the lesson and the coaches who prepare for each session.
So please be on time ready to start at 6:45am with warm ups and be ready to go.
Again, teams will be advertised every Thursday on the Marist App for all teams playing this weekend.
This a reminder that the Marist Junior and Senior Doubles tournament is fast approaching so please sort out your partner and enter by sending your nomination to MCATennis@marash.qld.edu.au.
May the best teams win and good luck to all who enter. Yes, we will have a sausage sizzle on both days for all players entered.

Ms Kathryn Badini - Hockey Coordinator
On Wednesday afternoon, our Hockey XI had their first competitive game against Brisbane State High School. It was a good test of the team in two ways. Firstly, in how they combined together in their set positions, and secondly in how they supported each other under stress. Unfortunately, it took us a little while to work on these, and whilst Oliver Shinkel (Year 12) was able to score quickly, we were only one-nil up at halftime; always a precarious place to be.
At half time, instead of focusing on scoring, our focus changed to being patient, making sure to support each other and more the ball laterally. Eventually, we hit our straps with Kalen Neville (Year 12) scoring a lovely deflection goal assisted by Frank Piper (Year 12) and Ollie scoring twice more, giving him a hat trick and the team a 4-nil victory. Hopefully, some lessons learnt that will be applied for the rest of the season.
Our 1st XI are against Grammar on Wednesday, with our 2nd XI facing St Patrick’s College on Friday.
