Assistant Principal's Message

Literacy @ MPRPS
Literacy learning continues to be a strong focus at MPRPS, with our teaching grounded in evidence-based practice and aligned with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0.
In the early years, students participate in daily, systematic phonics instruction as part of the Victorian Department of Education’s Phonics Plus approach. This ensures children develop strong foundations in decoding, spelling and fluency. Alongside phonics, we explicitly teach all elements of the Big 6 of Reading;
- oral language
- phonological awareness
- phonics
-fluency
-vocabulary
-comprehension
so that students build both the skills to read and the ability to deeply understand what they read.
Across the school, our reading programs are strengthened through the use of English Text Studies. These units support rich exploration of high-quality literature while explicitly teaching vocabulary, background knowledge, grammar and comprehension strategies. Text studies allow students to engage deeply with complex texts, building critical thinking and analytical skills in line with the expectations of the new English Curriculum 2.0.
The revised Victorian Curriculum 2.0 places a stronger emphasis on:
- Explicit teaching of foundational reading skills in the early years
- Knowledge-rich text studies
- Vocabulary development
- Clear progression in writing and grammar
At MPRPS, this means a consistent, structured approach to literacy from Foundation to Year 6. Our goal is to ensure every student develops the confidence, knowledge and skills to become a capable, thoughtful and enthusiastic reader.
If you would like to know more about how we teach reading in the early years please join us for our Phonics and Early Reading Parent Information Session on Thursday 12th March. Follow the link to register your attendance.
