Curriculum Development at HPS

Highton Primary School is proud to be the only government school in Geelong to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP). By combining the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 allows us to provide your child with the best of both worlds.

Our teachers work together to create engaging learning experiences. They collaborate in teams and use the Victorian Curriculum to plan units of inquiry around six transdisciplinary themes. These units connect subjects like literacy, math, humanities, science, and the arts, creating a rich and meaningful learning experience. Specialist teachers also contribute their expertise to these units, ensuring a well-rounded education. In addition, teachers plan units within their subject areas to develop specific skills.

At Highton PS, we believe children learn best when they are encouraged to ask questions. Through both explicit and inquiry-based learning, we create a supportive space where students feel safe to explore new ideas and learn from their mistakes. This approach builds critical thinking and problem-solving skills, preparing our students to be lifelong learners.

Our Program of Inquiry (POI) Throughout the year, students explore six "Transdisciplinary Themes" that connect local and global issues:

Who we are
Where we are in place and time
How we express ourselves
How the world works
How we organise ourselves
Sharing the planet

We value our students' perspectives. By encouraging them to contribute to the development of these units, we give them ownership over their learning, making it more personal and engaging.
