Thanks to our wonderful student leader flag monitors we have new flags for 2026.
Every Day Counts from Day One
We are now midway through Term 1! It’s been wonderful to see the hallways of HPS filled with energy as our students settle into their new routines and classrooms.
At HPS, we prioritise regular school attendance because we know that being here every day means experiencing what counts: the learning, the friendships, and the fun that shapes your child’s future.
Why it Matters
Last year, our students missed an average of 17.5 days of school. While a day here or there might not seem like much, it adds up quickly. Over a primary school journey, that level of absence equates to 2.5 full terms of missed learning and social growth.
Navigating Absences and Wellbeing
We understand that there are many valid reasons for families taking leave during the school term. We simply ask that you are strategic when planning these breaks. For example, if you take a week’s holiday during the term, we encourage you to minimize other non-medical absences to help keep your child’s learning on track.
If your child is feeling nervous about schoolwork or new friendships, the best remedy is often to encourage them to come in. Avoiding school can actually make those "big feelings" grow and become harder to manage. If you’re finding the morning routine a struggle, please reach out—we are here to help!
Working Together
To ensure we can support your child effectively, please follow our school notification procedures:
- Daily Absences: If your child is unwell or must be absent, please notify us as soon as possible via Compass.
- Extended Holidays: If you are planning a family holiday of four or more days during the school term, you are required to inform the Principal via email (highton.ps@education.vic.gov.au) at least two weeks prior to the trip.
- Seek Support: If your child is having difficulty attending or feeling anxious about school, please speak with their Class Teacher or Mrs. Tait (Mental Health and Wellbeing Teacher).
By working together, we can ensure every student at HPS feels safe, supported, and ready to learn every single day.
Enjoy!
Robbie
