Short Story Competition

Congratulations to Amber Mestagh (9R3) and Emily Forbes (9R3) for being shortlisted in the 2024 Monash Short Story Competition, and to Elaiza Fernandez (9R3) for placing third. The three girls submitted stories they had written for the Year 9 English Gothic Literature Creative Writing Unit.

All three stories were astute, well-crafted and explored the interplay between darkness and desire that is central to the gothic style.

It’s not easy to share work you’ve written with the public and they should be congratulated for their hard work and bravery.

Year 11 Legal Studies – Magistrates’ Court

“Today the year 11 Legal studies students visited the Magistrates court accompanied by Miss Lin and Miss Bull. As we entered the building we got security checks then made our way into the first court where we got greeted by a magistrate who answered questions and walked us through the processes and court etiquette. Next we got the freedom to roam the court rooms ensuring we bow the magistrates on entry and exit of the court rooms. We heard a range of cases both summary, indictable and indictable cases heard summarily which includes cases such as traffic road offences, motor vehicle theft and driving suspension. After that we went back to the court to meet with the magistrate again who answered more questions then we went back to school. Overall it was a very good experience.”

  • Brileah Nichols and Talise Costabile

“The Legal Studies class, taught by Miss Lin and supervised by Ms Bull visited the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on the 23rd of October. We were first greeted by a group of court personnel who guided us through court etiquette, as well as the aspects of each persons duty within the courtroom. Following this, we were then introduced to a Magistrate, who was off duty, and she was able to answer any questions we had. We were then free to explore the prior specified court rooms, and learn through first-hand experiences about court proceedings. This life changing experience will help aid us as Legal Studies students in choosing which path we want to take in life and whether we'd like to become lawyers, Magistrates, or anyone involved with the courts of Victoria.”

Thank you :)

“Today we visited the Melbourne Magistrates Court. As we got there, and after going through security in the entrance, we were taken to a court room, to meet a Magistrate herself. She gave us an overview of her job and answered any questions we had for her. Then we got some time to look around all six levels of the Magistrates Court and hear cases. We listened mainly summary offences but got to hear a case involving drugs and mental health. After roughly half an hour, we met back in a court room with the Magistrate alongside registries for a discussion about the cases we saw. It was an amazing experience that I absolutely loved/”

  • Mikaela Ferris

“We highly enjoyed our visit to the Magistrate’s court. We spoke to a magistrate who spoke to us about her areas of expertise, and her pathway into entering the legal system. A few people in our class asked some interesting questions. We then went into some courts and watched some cases such as indictable offences heard summarily, and small assessment trials. Overall, it was a very valuable experience.”

Electronic device use at Brentwood Canteen

We would like to thank you for your continued support with the Personal Mobile Devices Policy. We have noticed students trying to utilise their phones as a payment method at the canteen and ask that families look to make other arrangements.

Mobile phones are not to be used at the canteen as they are not allowed to be in use between the school hours of 8.45am and 3.05pm.

Students can make payment via an EFTPOS card or cash.

Thank you for your cooperation.
