Food Technology Excursion 2024

Year 12 students attended an educational excursion for Food Technology this year. We travelled out to Penrith where we visited two food manufacturing businesses, and the students were able to tour their manufacture sites.

The first was Harvest B, a manufacturer of plant-based proteins who took us through the whole scientific process from where they source their produce to the completed product. We were able to enter the factory floor and see the technology involved in creating this product, which was fascinating. A taste testing of their plant-based meat alternatives was provided and generally well received.  This was a great opportunity for the students to see the whole process of food manufacture all the way through to tasting the end product. Harvest B staff gave a detailed explanation of the operation as well as giving the students a goodie bag of their products.

From Harvest B we walked around the corner to Ribs and Roasts. This was a totally different experience, seeing the meat processing operation in action. After a very detailed discussion at the start, we were given a tour of the factory facilities. The students had to get suited up for this part and go through a shoe wash to enter the factory. The students observed the cleaning of equipment, the sous vide process of cooking and the packaging and storage of their finished products.

Both businesses provided a real world experience for our students in line with our Food Product Development and Food manufacture units of work.

A big thank you to the students who attended the day to make it a success.
