News - from Chris and Mel in the kitchen & garden
In Cooking this week Grade 2 and 3 with Grade 4 helpers, cooked Gyoza (Japanese Dumplings) with Gyoza Sauce.
We used Broccolini, Silverbeet, Celery, Spring Onions, Garlic Chives and Chives from the garden and Potatoes and Cabbage.
Darron’s group mashed the potatoes for the filling until it was smooth. They also learned how to measure out the ingredients to bind the Gyoza filling.
After finishing each task everyone did a great job, clearing the table and wiping them ready for the next task. The Grade 4s did a great job loading the dishwasher and stacking the dishes as we prepared the ingredients.
Chris’ group washed, trimmed and cut the Broccolini, spring onions, celery and Silverbeet into small pieces. Cooper’s group showed great knife skills cutting the celery and cabbage into very small pieces. Tahj then helped students use the food processor to cut all the vegetables finely.
We put all the ingredients for the filling into large bowls and everyone had a turn mixing it until it was combined and smooth.
Darron has been to Japan and explained to us how Gyoza are made and eaten in Japan.
After recess, students learnt how to fill and fold the Gyoza wrappers. They learnt how to add just the right amount of filling (1 tsp) then fold and pleat the Gyoza by hand. They also used the plastic Gyoza moulds to make them. They did a great job making very good looking Gyoza with the right amount of filling.
While we cooked the Gyoza, Darron’s group measured out the ingredients and mixed them to make the Gyoza sauce.
Levi, Rosa and their groups cooked the Gyoza, first by browning them in a little oil and then adding water to steam them.
While the Gyoza cooked, the other students cleaned up, rinsed and washed the dishes and set the table.
We served the Gyoza with Gyoza sauce and Sweet Chilli sauce and Tamari.
It was great to see that all students tried and enjoyed the Gyoza they made.
Owen said, “The Gyoza were really good with the sauce. I made the dumplings.
Liv (Grade 4) said “I enjoyed helping Grade 2/3, I mashed the potatoes and set the table”
Henry explained that he blended the veggies and mixed the Gyoza ingredients together and put all the water jugs on tables. He said, “I loved the dumplings.”
Cooper said, “ I cut the celery and helped set the table and put chairs out The Gyoza were extremely nice, I recommend making them at home. I tried the Gyoza and sauce and they went well with the sauce. I rate them 9/10.”
Well done Grade 2 and 3 and Grade 4 on a great cooking session.
The recipe is attached and the instructions for how to fold the Gyoza.
