Classroom learning

So Busy and so much learning happening in Year 5/6!

Term 4 has a sense of charm and excitement, particularly in Year 5/6. The term began with our school celebration on Holy Rosary Day, including the announcement of our 2024 Mercy Spirit Award recipents.

Some senior students attended the Hot Shot Tennis Finals and the Basketball Division Finals held at Keilor Park Basketball and Netball Stadium. We thank Andrea for helping to organise our participation in this event.

Current Year Five students are preparing for their Leadership presentations.

The Year 6 Year Book is well underway (Thank you Kate Fritsch) preparation for our Year 6 Graduation prayer service (Thank you Sarah) and celebration (Thank you Naomi Joyce) are being organised and are travelling well.

Lots of Buddy time is taking place and The Big Day Out is booked and just around the corner.

We’re also planning a Year 5/ 6 Christmas Market which will take place on Friday December 6  to raise money for Kensington Neighbourhood House (KNH) in line with our ‘Love in Action’ 2024 school theme.

Many of our HR students and families use KNH; it is a place for the whole community to enjoy. We recognise how special it is to give back to the community.

It’s busy, but ever so EXCITING! Keep your eyes and ears open to find out about the wonderful things happening in Year 5/ 6 throughout the term!

Religious Education

Every year we celebrate Holy Rosary Day with enthusiasm and excitement. Year 5/ 6 attended a parish Mass and listened to Fr Thang discuss the significance of the Rosary and how to use rosary beads. Fr Thang was impressed with our participation and interest and complemented our students on the way they listened and answered questions.

We also enjoyed a terrific and interesting show from Professor Bunsen to celebrate Holy Rosary Day. The Year 5 /6 students were so engaged that they didn’t want it to end. We thank Christine and Sarah for organising this successful event. We were also delighted with the announcement of our Mercy Spirit Award recipients;  Cooper and Estella who accepted the award with honour and pride. We congratulate both students for achievement.

Here is what they had to say about accepting the Mercy Spirit Award:

Cooper

‘It was a huge surprise to receive the Mercy Spirit Award. I will try to help others in all year levels. Thank you to all the teachers that I have had in my 7 years at Holy Rosary and to my family. I am proud of myself because I try to be the best person that I can be!’

Estella

‘Throughout my years at Holy Rosary, I have longed to be awarded with the Mercy Spirit Award. An award is given to students who display the values and qualities of integrity, inclusiveness, and one of the primary qualities, kindness. For the past 6 years, I have looked up to the Mercy Spirit leaders as my role models, and as the students I aspire to be. It is an honour and privilege to receive the Mercy Spirit Award 2024.’

Mathematics

This term, students will consolidate their learning and fine-tune their mathematical skills with a focus on solving multi-step word problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, developing strategies to approach real-world mathematical challenges. They will then explore fractions, decimals, and percentages with an emphasis on money-related contexts, applying these concepts to financial decision-making and budgeting. In statistics and probability, students will collect and interpret data, making predictions based on their analysis. Finally, the term will conclude with a unit on time, where students will work with both digital and analogue clocks, solve time-related problems, and explore the use of timetables. These topics aim to enhance students’ mathematical reasoning and application in everyday situations.

Literacy

This term, we are excited to explore Rivet Boy by Barbara Henderson, a captivating historical novel set during the construction of the Forth Bridge in 19th-century Scotland. The story follows John, a young rivet boy who faces immense challenges but meets them with courage and resilience. Through his journey, John teaches us the value of perseverance, loyalty, and bravery in the face of adversity.

In addition to studying Rivet Boy, our focus will be on poetry this term.  Students will explore various poetic techniques, such as rhyme and figurative language, to craft their own original poems. They’ll learn how to use imagery and symbolism to evoke emotion and meaning, while also experimenting with different poetic forms. Through writing, editing, and refining their work, students will strengthen their understanding of how poetry can express deep ideas with precision and creativity. We'll offer plenty of opportunities for practice, peer review, and feedback to help everyone grow in their poetic abilities and develop their unique voice.

Inquiry

‘Bizarre Bazaar 'is our topic for the term and we’ve already started with a BANG!

Students will be working through activities to develop a successful group business. Decisions will be made to make as much profit from a business idea to sell at a Christmas Market. Business Teams will follow a criterion with rules and regulations. Marketing, advertising, decision-making, co-operating, reflecting, budgeting, strategic planning and delegating are some of the skills students will develop and strengthen over the term.

We can’t wait to showcase our work and raise money for such an important community organisation!
