Day 1 Reflection: Ruby Y
From the 20th – 24th of October, we experienced a thrilling trip to the capital of our country! Our trip started off with many goodbyes, yawns and desires for just ten more minutes in bed before we departed from school to Launceston Airport. The plane trips to our destination had created a bubbly atmosphere among the eager students, especially for those who were experiencing something entirely new!
Once we had disembarked from our plane, our first stop was to Mount Ainslie Lookout. This allowed our group of students and adults to view the intriguing contents of Canberra and catch a glimpse of what they would be exploring in the days ahead. Next, we toured around the National Museum of Australia, where we discovered stories of Australia’s history and key people and events that shaped our nation. This brought us a further understanding of our country and the environment we live in today.
To finish off our first day in Canberra, we self-guided ourselves around the Anzac Parade Memorial Walk, where we reflected the sacrifice and service of the many Australians and New Zealanders who had died in war. Already on our first day we were enlightened with many fun facts, informative tours, and we just could not wait for the next day’s new experiences!
Day 2 Reflection: Bronte
On Tuesday we went to Parliament House where we took part in various activities; first off we went to the Parliament Education Office. Inside we role-played what it is like in the House of Representatives. Then a lovely lady toured us around and showed us all the symbolic parts of Parliament’s design. She showed pictures engraved in the tiles and taught us about the history and reasoning behind them. Next, we went on the roof of Parliament, which was special. We were able to see some of the places we had been to and were going to. Afterwards we went to lunch at the Arboretum where we enjoyed a delicious hamburger and played at the park nearby. We went on a tour of all the Embassies that Australia has gifted. We then went to the National Electoral Education Centre where we learnt about Australia’s democratic history and how elections work. After that we headed to the Australian Institution of Sport. The AIS was really fascinating because we got to see some facilities that the Australian Olympians trained in.
Day 3 Reflection: Scarlett
On Wednesday, we went to the War Memorial in the morning. We went into the Second World War room first. In there we saw a diagram of the HMAS Sydney (a famous Australian ship that sank). In the First World War room there were diagrams of what the war grounds looked like. We went outside and saw the names of people that have died in the war. We then went to Government House and had a tour. There were lots of fancy rooms like the lounge room and the dining room. We went outside and saw lots of pretty flowers and the Governor General’s car, which was a Rolls Royce. We also went to Questacon and went in different rooms like a Lego room and a weather room. In the weather room we went into an earthquake house which felt like a real earthquake and saw a flash of lightning and what it looks like up close. We also went into another room that had a long slide with a big drop.
Day 4 Reflection: Myles
On the fourth day of Canberra we woke up early in the morning and had to get ready to go. While my cabin was getting ready someone started eating their lollies! After we were all ready, we hopped on the bus and had to go on a three hour drive to Sydney Airport. After about one hour we stopped at a park and had some egg and bacon rolls for breakfast. While we were playing on the playground at the park some people were spinning each other on a wheel thing, someone somehow spun around 100 times. We also got to have some cake since it was Ruby B’s birthday. Our next stop was Sydney Airport where we checked in and then walked around the airport in our groups. My group got Krispy Kremes from the airport. On the flight to Launceston everyone was chatting and on the plane speaker it was announced that it was Ruby B’s birthday. Once we landed in Launceston we got straight on the bus and just had the one and a half hour drive ahead. Once we arrived at school we got to see our family and go home.
Our recent excursion to Beaconsfield Mine was a journey back in time, filled with hands-on exploration and discovery! Students stepped into a replica mine, gaining insight into the miners’ world through interactive exhibits and experiencing the challenges and triumphs of those who worked underground. We explored the fascinating museum, rich with artifacts and stories that brought Tasmania’s mining history to life. The highlight for many was trying our luck at panning for ‘museum gold,’ as we learned about the tools and techniques prospectors once used. It was a day of learning and adventure, offering a glimpse into the past and the resilience of the people who shaped it.
The Schools Triathlon Challenge is being held in Devonport on Friday 22nd November 2024 for students in Years 3-6. This event is a fantastic opportunity for students to try a new sport in a supportive environment. Participation is the foundation of this event and students are encouraged to be involved regardless of current fitness level, ability, previous experience or preferred sport.
Students can enter as an individual or as part of a team. If students are interested, they can enter both the individual and team race as they are held at different times in the schedule. There is an entry fee of $25 per student regardless of how many events a student is entered in.
Teams can be all male, all female or mixed, made up of either two or three students and can be made up of students from different years (but will be entered in the race of the oldest competitor). If your child would like to be in a team, please indicate on the entry form which leg of the race they would like to compete in, and we will try our best to put teams together. If your child has formed their own team with friends, please write each competitor’s name on the entry form in the leg of the race they will be completing, e.g. Swimmer – Chad Smit – Year 4.
Students need to return their entry form to the school office by 8.30am Friday 1st November if they wish to participate, using the official entry form (forms have been sent home with students and are also available from the office or on Schoolbox).
Please note that the $25 payment is to be paid when the entry form is submitted (cash or EFT please). This will be a school excursion for those interested and a permission note will be given to students who enter.
Participating students will need to provide their own gear for the triathlon, including bathers/wetsuit, sneakers, bike and helmet. It will also be the responsibility of families to transport bikes to and from the triathlon. More information will be given to students nearer to the event, or you can visit: www.schoolstriathlonchallenge.com.
Thank you, we are looking forward to another great event!
