Year 6 Melbourne Museum ‘Safe Journeys’ Road to Zero Excursion
To help our Year 6 students prepare for the transition to high school, we attended the Safe Journeys program at the Melbourne Museum. The students thought about the four areas of road safety: safe roads, safe speeds, safe vehicles and safe people. In the learning space, they used large touchscreens to create their own road safety advert. In the experience space, they investigated what safety features make a car safe, why we need speed limits and how car safety has evolved over the years.

On Tuesday, we had a ‘Road to Zero’ excursion at the Melbourne Museum. We learnt how to be safe on the roads and that we are aiming for zero deaths on the road by 2050. We also learned how to plan a journey on public transport.

My favourite part of the excursion was when we got to put on VR (virtual reality) headsets. They took us from the past into the future in different cars, with each car getting more advanced and safer with more road rules as time went on. One of the future rules was to lower the speed limit around schools to 30km/h instead of 40 km.

This week, on Tuesday, we went on an excursion to the Melbourne Museum to learn about the Road to Zero. Road to Zero is a campaign focused on having zero deaths on the road by 2050.

My favourite part of the Melbourne Museum excursion was the VR headset due to the fact that it gave you a realistic simulation of how cars have evolved over a different period of time/years.

At the Road to Zero experience room at the Melbourne Museum, there was a really interesting activity that caught my eye. It was an activity screen that showcased a person, but not a regular person. It was a person called Graham who had evolved the body that we would need to survive a crash. It made me think about safe speeds.
