Green Class News

Mrs Kroek & Mr Gullo

This term, we welcome Mr Gullo to Green Class as co-teacher with Mrs Kroek.

Mr Gullo will be teaching Green Class on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

Mrs Kroek will teach Green Class on Tuesday afternoons and all day on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Miss Grigg will continue to teach Green Class on Friday afternoons.

Miss Simone will continue to support Green Class students in their learning throughout the week as well.

We thank Mrs Scifleet and Faith for all they have done for us, and we will miss them. We are excited to meet Faith's baby and have presented her with a book of our hopes and wishes for her baby – some led to a few tears, while others gave Faith a giggle!

Creative Arts: Green Class will be looking at various artists and art periods throughout the term. We looked at Frida Kahlo last week and created some art inspired by her self-portraits. We will begin our study of Andy Warhol and Pop Art this week.

We will also be doing singing, music and dance throughout the term.

Science: We will be looking at life cycles. Last week, we began our unit by exploring the life cycle of a lion and then drawing a diagram of either a panda, gorilla or dog on our own. We had a blast wrapping up our unit on States of Matter by making oobleck in the last week of Term 3. Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid made from cornflour and water that acts as both a liquid and a solid, depending on the force applied to it.

Maths: Each day, our Maths lessons are divided into a number focus and an additional focus. Last week, we looked at determining missing numbers in number sentences and applying this in budgeting by planning a pizza night for four people. Students used different strategies and tools, such as number lines and calculators. In the second half of our lessons, we explored mass by looking at different types of scales, weighing different objects in grams, and ordering them from lightest to heaviest. This week, our number focus will remain the same, but we will begin looking at time.

Literacy

Reading/Writing: Students will be looking at different focus texts each week with Mrs Kroek and completing writing based on these. For example, last week we read How to Move a Zoo and, on Wednesday, wrote a postcard to a friend as if the elephant in the story had been accidentally delivered to their house. On Thursday, students listened to an information text on elephants and then wrote an information report about an elephant.

On Mondays and Tuesdays, Mr Gullo will be exploring poetry, and students will also complete writing based on various picture prompts. Green Class will watch BTN on Fridays and complete related questions and tasks.

Structure of the Morning Literacy Session: Literacy is structured into whole-class time (where we focus on a text or poetry, writing preparation, and whole-class spelling) followed by Your Turn task time. All Your Turn tasks are posted on our Google Classroom, and during this time, students complete activities in the order they choose. The activities include independent writing, a spelling booklet task, a handwriting task, Prodigy Literacy tasks, reading tasks, and more.

Everyone has been loving this added independence and working really well!

HSIE: Green Class will be learning about Italy this term with Mr Gullo. They are excited to be learning about the Italian language as part of this too.

PD/PE: Our focus this term for PD is Being Resilient is Brilliant. We started the unit by talking about what being resilient looks like and ways we can show resilience. Next week, we will be talking about growth mindset and bouncing back. Green Class will continue having regular movement breaks and activities, as well as Sport with Miss Grigg on Fridays.

Library Borrowing: Borrowing time is every Monday with our lovely librarian, Mrs Vidler. The more reading we do, the more confident readers we become, so we encourage all students to borrow.

Mrs Kroek, Mr Gullo, Miss Simone and Green Class are all looking forward to a great term ahead.
