Mathematics
We have had lots of fun being hands-on in math this term. We started the term with a focus on mass; spending lessons estimating and weighing various objects within the classroom. We learnt how to use analogue and digital scales, and even learnt how to weight things that don't fit on a scale by weighing ourselves and the object. We linked this learning to a real-life scenario by packing a suitcase for a holiday and adding together how much each item in our suitcase weighed. To add challenge, we then needed to remove items from our suitcase to make sure our suitcase is under the required weight.
We then transferred our learning of mass to learning about volume and capacity. The students thoroughly enjoyed filling containers with water and measuring the capacity of different sized and styled containers.
We are currently enjoying learning about probability and collecting data, and will be conducting lots of hands-on experiments to collect data that we will then analyse.
Writing
Students in Grades Three and Four are revising their learning from Term Two on how to write clear and detailed instructional pieces that teach others how to do something step by step. To make a paper boats, they were given pictures to then guide them to write clear instructions. As they worked, students practiced using sequence words like first, next, then, and finally to organize their ideas. This writing helps them develop skills in clear communication, logical thinking, and understanding how to guide a reader through a task. Additionally, the students have been revising poetry and learning new styles of poetry. The students enjoyed writing short, silly limericks and have a good understanding of the rhyming structure in a limerick.
Reminders
It is an expectation in Year Three and Four, that students are reading for 20 minutes each night and recording their reading into their diary. Students can choose how they read: independently, to an adult, to a sibling, or even to a teddy or pet.
We are focusing on learning our times tables, and it is expected that students are practicing their times tables at home each night.
