Level 5 & 6

Week 3, Term 4

Welcome to Week 3!

We are looking forward to another busy and exciting week in the 5/6 area, with plenty of learning experiences and special events ahead — including our school’s 130th Birthday Celebration on Friday!

A huge thank you to our families who continue to support the classrooms by providing tissues and wipes — these small contributions make a big difference as we head into the final weeks of Term 4.

🌱 LITERACY - READING

This week, students are continuing to explore The History of the Computer, focusing on the post war boom and the space race. We’ll be introducing new vocabulary connected to this topic, such as prosperity, innovation, and consumerism.

Later in the week, students will watch and analyse a Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell video about Artificial Intelligence. This will spark rich discussion around the impact of AI, media reliability, and how technology influences the way we live and learn.

What you can do at home: Ask your child what they’ve discovered about how computers have changed over time. Discuss AI and the impact it is having on media and the internet.

🌱 LITERACY - WRITING

Students will continue developing their confidence as speakers through short, 30-second Rapid Fire Talks and a variety of body language and delivery exercises.

By the end of the week, students will begin drafting and rehearsing their own one-minute speech based on the prompt:

“The character trait that will get you everywhere in life is…”

This encourages reflection on positive personal qualities such as kindness, perseverance, or resilience, and gives students a chance to connect personal experiences with their persuasive writing.

What you can do at home: Encourage your child to practise their speech at home, focusing on clear voice, eye contact, and confident body language.

🌱 NUMERACY

Grade 5: Students are continuing to build their understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages, focusing on how these concepts connect in everyday situations.

Grade 6: Students are exploring patterns and algebra, identifying and creating rules for growing patterns and using reasoning to find unknown values.

What you can do at home: Encourage your child to complete Mathletics tasks set for these areas of learning.

🌱 CBL

This week, our focus is on efficiency in coding — learning how programmers make their instructions shorter and smarter using loops and functions. Through Swift Playgrounds, students will solve coding challenges, rewrite longer instructions into loops, and even design a “looping dance move” using their coding logic.

Essential Question:

How can we use coding to solve problems and create solutions in our world?

Guiding Questions:

  • Where do we see coding in everyday life?
  • What is an algorithm and how do coders use them?
  • What problems do we face at school or in our community that coding might help with?
  • How can we share our coding project with others to make a positive impact?

Challenge:

Design, test and showcase a coding solution in Swift Playgrounds that solves a problem or improves an experience in our school community.

🌱 HOMEWORK

Students are expected to complete homework on a weekly basis. This consists of

- 100 minutes total of reading a novel/factual text of their choice

- 3 (minimum) Mathletics tasks, which the teachers will assign

- 2 Nessy activities

This homework is to be recorded in the Calendar App on student iPads. Your child's teacher will check this homework on Friday.

BUDDY BAGS - Grade 5 students should now only have one task left to complete for their Buddy Bags, which are gifted to their 2026 Prep Buddies. This is the 'Nameplate' task that will be completed in school, once we know our buddy's name. Please check in with your child to see which tasks they may still need support in completing.

MEMORY BOOKS - Grade 6 students will continue to work on their Memory Book to reflect on their experiences at Wonga Park Primary School. This information has been communicated to parents via email, and is available for students on Showbie.

🌿 REMINDERS
