📔Mentor Text:

This weeks mentor text is 'Hey Little Ant' by Phillip and Hannah Hoose.

This picture storybook introduces students to the foundations of persuasive writing by exploring how authors use language to influence others. It encourages readers to consider different points of view and understand how words can shape opinions. The story presents both sides of a situation and concludes with a powerful question: “What would you do?”

Through reading, writing, and oral activities, students will begin to identify the structure of persuasive texts — including point of views, supporting reasons, and conclusion. They will learn to distinguish between facts and opinions, and practise expressing their own viewpoints using clear reasons to persuade their audience.

What can you do at home?

  • Nessy is a great literacy resource to use that supplements your child's reading in a fun engaging way on their iPad
  • Have your child ask you questions about the books that they are reading.
  • Before reading a book, have your child make predictions about the story line

🧮 Maths:

Grade One Students:

This week, Grade One students will be learning about fractions. They will explore the concepts of symmetry, halves, and quarters, and will be introduced to how to write fractions.

What can you do at home?

  • Cut fruit, sandwiches, or pizzas into halves and quarters. Talk about how each piece is an equal part of the whole.
  • Look around the house for things that can be divided equally (e.g., half a biscuit, a quarter of an apple, half a piece of toast).
  • Share toys (blocks, cars, or LEGO) equally between two or four people

Grade Two Students:

This week, Grade Two students will continue to explore fractions. They will explore the concept of symmetry and be introduced to equivalent fractions e.g. one half is the same as two quarters.

What can you do at home?

  • Look for shapes or objects around your home that can be divided into halves,  quarters or eighths.
