Photography MAP Excursion – Exploring Art and Architecture in Melbourne

As part of our Art and Architecture theme, Photography MAP students recently took a trip into the city to explore some of Melbourne’s most historic and visually inspiring sites.
The day began with a train ride to Parliament Station, followed by a stroll through the Treasury Gardens. Students admired the impressive architecture of the Old Treasury Building and the cluster of grand government buildings that form Melbourne’s civic precinct.
Next stop was the Fitzroy Gardens Conservatory, where students were greeted by a stunning display of colour and texture. The greenhouse was filled with vibrant floral arrangements, elegant sculptures, tranquil fountains, and charming bridges—an absolute feast for the eyes and a perfect source of photographic inspiration. The friendly keeper shared insights about the current floral exhibition and mentioned that a new display would be opening soon—something to look forward to!
After a quick walk across the city, the group arrived at the Old Melbourne Gaol for a guided tour. Students listened intently (and sometimes with grimaces!) to stories of early settler life and the harsh conditions of imprisonment in the 1800s. Photographing the dimly lit stone corridors proved to be a challenge, but it also gave students the chance to experiment with camera settings and creative lighting techniques.
To finish the day, everyone headed to Melbourne Central for a well-earned lunch before catching the train back to Frankston.
It was a beautiful day filled with learning, laughter, and artistic exploration. Students came away inspired—not only by Melbourne’s rich history and architecture but also by the new photographic skills they developed along the way.
