Unleashing Creativity: Integrating Math and Art with DESMOS

Creating Futures Together

We were humbled by the positive response to our talk at the MAV23 Conference. Our aim was to explore innovative ways to integrate art and math, and the audience showed great interest in the three inspiring journeys we shared. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to showcase how art can help foster a love for mathematics.

Nery's Journey: Leading Educational Innovation

In the first part of the presentation, I shared my journey as the Teaching and Learning Leader at Wheelers Hill Secondary College. I emphasised the importance of engaging students in challenging tasks that are still interesting and engaging. We explored open-ended tasks using DESMOS, which allowed students to delve into the creative side of mathematics. Our aim is to break free from traditional constraints and empower both teachers and students to view mathematics as a dynamic and artistic endeavour.

Laura's Journey: Nurturing New Talent in the Classroom

The second part showcased the journey of our new Mathematics Learning Area Leader, Laura McClure, who embraced DESMOS activities. She integrated them into the Year 9 RISE curriculum at Wheelers Hill Secondary College, successfully incorporating DESMOS Art Projects into the classroom. The presentation included vibrant examples of student work, highlighting the positive impact of integrating technology and creativity into the learning experience.

A Very Special Journey: Student Empowerment Beyond the Curriculum

One of the most memorable segments featured a student sharing his journey with DESMOS. He passionately discussed how the platform became a catalyst for him to explore and develop his mathematical skills beyond the formal curriculum. His story resonated with the participants, illustrating the profound impact DESMOS can have on students and inspiring them to follow their passion for mathematics.

Throughout the presentation, participants were treated to videos where students recounted their experiences with mathematical art. The narratives reflected the challenges, rewards, and sheer enjoyment of the process. Students seamlessly incorporated their diverse interests (such as cultural heritage, climate change, and personal experiences during the COVID lockdowns in Victoria) into their mathematical creations.

The response from the audience was overwhelmingly positive, and we were delighted to witness educators and professionals recognise the potential of using art to redefine the boundaries of mathematics education.

As we continue to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of education, platforms like DESMOS offer a unique opportunity to foster creativity, passion, and a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. The MAV23 Conference was a testament to the collective commitment to advance mathematics education, and we are grateful to have shared our experiences with such an enthusiastic audience.

We invite you to join the conversation on reimagining mathematics education. Let's explore innovative ways to inspire the next generation of mathematicians, where creativity and passion take centre stage.
