State High School Year 7/8 Netball Championships

A talented group of Year 8 students travelled to the Devonport Recreation Centre last Thursday to compete in the Year 7/8 State Netball Championships, following their 2nd place finish in the regional titles last term.

The team had an early start, leaving the College at 6am, but were raring to go for their first match against Burnie High School.  It was a tight first half, with Burnie taking a slight advantage in the third quarter and going on to win 27-20.  The second game was a thriller against Launceston Christian School, with neither team having more than a three goal advantage in the match.  When the final siren went, Mount Carmel were down by just a single goal, 21-20.  This resulted in a 5th place play-off match against Marist Regional College, which was equally as thrilling.  This time the tables were turned, with Mount Carmel coming from 3 points down at three quarter time to win the match 21-20.

“I was so proud of the group.  They coped with the pressure of those tight matches, and remained composed and supportive of each other.”

Ms Adele Larratt

Well done to Year 8 students, Sophie Booth, Antonette Conrades, Maggie Smythe, Ella Cunningham, Ella Nosworthy, Ruby Kaye, Ivy Bresnehan, Amelia Griffiths and Bronte Crane.  Thanks to Ms Larratt and Frances Conrades for coaching and managing the team.

Regional Basketball Championships

On 11-12 November, the College was represented by a team of Year 3/4 students at the Regional Basketball Championships at the Kingborough Sports Centre. The Mount Carmel team participated in Division 2, with players of varied experience. All players competed in the Term 3 JSSATIS roster and were ready for the step up to competitive basketball.

Saturday provided the toughest matches, and the team was also adjusting to the level of competition.  They battled hard, and displayed great sportsmanship. Results were:

  • St Mary’s Blue defeated Mount Carmel 24-12
  • Lindisfarne Primary defeated Mount Carmel 37-10

On Sunday, the team came out firing, with many players hitting the scoreboard, to secure a strong win.

  • Mount Carmel defeated Corpus Christi 15-2

Their final game was a thriller.  The team fought hard to stay in the match, almost clinching a draw, before a foul took St Brigid’s to the foul line, with a free throw putting the match beyond doubt.

  • St Brigid’s defeated Mount Carmel 13-10

Players included Year 3 students, Layla Cranefield, Ella Lagerewskij and Madison Schenk and Year 4 students, Bella Seeber-Peattie, Millicent Wedd, Willow Nally, Christelle Ghanam and Chloe Ponder.  Special thanks to Coach, Josh Nally and Manager, Lisa Cranefield for their support in the lead up to and over the weekend.

This weekend, the College will be represented by two teams in the High Schools Championships.  A team in the Year 9/10 Division 1 roster, and a team in the Year 7/8 Division 2 roster.  The teams have been training hard and are looking forward to the weekend.  Good luck to both teams. Results can be followed on Play HQ via the link posted on the Basketball Tasmania Facebook page.

Secondary Tennis Grand Finalists

Congratulations to the Year 9 Tennis team of Zali Elliott, Freya Barwick and Ashlan Ryan who have finished the season on top of ladder, earning the right to host the Grand Final on Monday.  The team will play Friends’ Red, who have only lost one match, on forfeit.

Mount Carmel have had a strong season defeating Dominic, Fahan and St Mary’s 6-0.  Friends’ Red defeated Mount Carmel 5-1 in their round 2 encounter, so are likely to start favourites for the match.

The Year 7/8 team has also enjoyed a dominant season in the SSATIS Year 8 roster, finishing in second place and earning a spot in the Grand Final next Tuesday.  The have won matches against Fahan Orange 4 - 2, Fahan Navy 6 – 0, Fahan White 5 – 1 and Friends’ White 6 – 0. Their only defeat was against Friends’ Grey in Round 4, who are undefeated.    Congratulations to Year 7 students Eleanor Williams and Zerena Dutta-Neilsen and Year 8 students Zarah Dutta-Neilsen, Paige Tkalac and Mandy Huang.

Goodluck to both teams in their Grand Finals next week.

Secondary Touch Football Grand Finalists

Good luck to the Year 8 Navy Touch Football team, who have also finished the season on top of the ladder, qualifying for the SSATIS Year 7/8 Grand Final.   The team includes Lola Helmers, Ivy Bresnehan, Matilda Forrest, Mabel Sangwell, Ella Nosworthy, Ruby Kaye, Isabelle Gray and Sophie Booth, and is coached by Alumni, Macy Bresnehan.   The team has won all their matches and we expect them to perform strongly against their opponent Fahan Navy next Monday.    We wish the team well for the big game.

Other Mount Carmel teams in the roster also had a great season.  Year 8 Gold finished in 3rd place, with three wins and a draw, unlucky not to play in the Grand Final too.  Year 7 White had only the bare numbers for the roster, but were still very competitive and did extremely well to finish 5th of nine teams, especially playing against many older players.

Both Year 9 teams came up against some strong opposition in the Year 9/10 roster, which was a great challenge, often testing their resolve and resilience.  Most importantly, the teams had lots of fun and enjoyed the competition and camaraderie.
