Positive Education in the Primary School

At Mount Carmel College we believe that the wellbeing of all students is paramount in allowing all our students to achieve both academic and personal success.  It is important to understand that we need to provide the skill set for all our students to be the very best they can be and to flourish.

Within the Primary school there have been so many great things happening around the concepts of positive psychology in order to encapsulate the wellbeing of students throughout the year.

This year there have been a number of different activities run to ensure that such positive psychology skills are being taught.  Some examples of different activities are:

  • the use of different picture books to explore the importance of kindness
  • warm fuzzies placed in a bucket when kind acts are seen
  • glitter jars used as this allows students to assess their thoughts, stresses or worries and for these thoughts to settle as the glitter settles
  • mindfulness colouring-ins and apps lets students sit and gather their thoughts and reflect on the day so far
  • gratitude journaling and/or gratitude letters which explores the idea around students highlighting what or who they are grateful for
  • positive thinking games
  • the exploration of growth mind set and how best we can change from a fixed mind set to one that it open to growth and being more determined
  • examination of different character strengths
  • the regular use of PULSE in Years 3 - 6
  • maintaining explicit teaching of wellbeing through our URSTRONG and teachpeec programmes
  • camps, excursions, daily pe, visiting guest speakers

Positive Education will allow all our students to ‘become just not be’ with a direct relationship to our core values given to us by the Sisters of Charity.
