Around the Primary Classes

Kindergarten

Our Kinder students have been learning how people learn to read and that there are other ways than printed words. We are fortunate to have a student in Year One who reads Braille and she came to the classroom to spell out the students' names and also read part of her own Braille book. The Kinder students all had a go at making their own Braille names using plasticine to define the dots.

After visiting the Marine Centre we have been busy creating a seahorse using papier-mâché. This week we took Sally the Seahorse outside to paint her beautiful colours.

Prep

In Prep we have been exploring the environment and how we can reuse the natural things around us. After reading the story “Leaf Man” by Lois Ehlert, we discussed how we could create a portrait of a person using natural materials already fallen from the trees/bushes. We discussed the elements of a face and then suggested materials to create these. Preps suggested things like fallen leaves for hair and sticks for the face outline.

After our discussion we went outside to collect our materials. The rules were that materials had to be from nature and it had to have already fallen from the tree/bush no picking.

Once back in the classroom we played around with our materials trying to find the best combination to create our faces. We spoke about making sure that the faces are visible, not just sticking everything down on the paper. Once they were happy they glued it down. Preps enjoyed exploring their school environment and collecting their natural objects.
