CURRICULUM FOCUS

This week in Maths we are learning about probability.

VOCABULARY

Probability - Probability is simply how likely something is to happen.

Probability scale - A probability scale is a number line from zero (with zero meaning an event is impossible) to 1 (one meaning an event is certain). In between zero and one are all the possibilities in between such as likely, unlikely or an even chance.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Choose 3 pencils and 3 pens and put them into a pillowcase. Ask your child what chance they have of pulling out a pencil (an even chance). Now there are 2 of one group and 3 of the other left in the pillow case. Ask your child if the probability or likelihood has now changed. Do this two more times. Discuss with your child how the likelihood changes each time another object is removed. I.e. The more one object is removed, the more likely the other object will be picked the next time.
