A Note from the Principal

Over the past few years many of our student leaders have asked why we don’t have a school motto.
Comparing us to our close partner schools in the Selective Entry Network who proudly display their motos on logos, websites and even uniform. As a school we have always been guided by our school values, Respect, Aspiration and Contribution, but the lack of a clear motto for the school is a gap. Over the last 18 months it is one that we have been working to address.
Developing a school motto is an important process for any school community. A motto is far more than just a collection of words, it is a statement of what we value most as a school and a guide for ensuring those values remain central in all aspects of what we do, now and into the future. It becomes a reflection of our identity, culture and aspirations as a community.
At SCHS, this process has very much been driven by student voice. Our 2025 School Captains worked tirelessly to begin this important work and laid strong foundations for the journey, even though they were unable to quite bring the process to completion during their leadership year. Their efforts have now been proudly continued by our 2026 School Captains, who have taken on the responsibility with great enthusiasm and commitment.
From the beginning, it has been essential that this becomes a motto for the entire SCHS community. To achieve this, there has been extensive consultation and input from students, staff and our dedicated Motto Committee, who have met weekly during lunchtimes throughout the year. Their dedication and thoughtful discussion have ensured that a wide range of perspectives have been considered in shaping a motto that truly represents our school.
This process has also provided a valuable opportunity to reflect deeply on what is most important to us at SCHS. While academic achievement was naturally considered, we ultimately felt that striving for academic excellence is already an inherent expectation of our school community and did not need to be explicitly captured in the motto itself.
Instead, our discussions focused on identifying the qualities and values that truly define life at SCHS and what we want every student to experience during their time here.
Through conversations with students, staff and the Motto Committee, several important themes consistently emerged, providing a powerful insight into the culture of our school community.
One of the strongest themes was the importance of joy, meaning and belonging. At SCHS, we want students to feel connected; to their peers, their teachers and the wider school community. To feel genuine pride in being part of our school. There was a strong belief that education should not simply be about achievement, but about creating a fulfilling and positive experience where students feel valued and supported.
Another key idea was the strength of community. Our discussions reflected the importance of building relationships, contributing positively to others and recognising that the experiences students have at school help shape the way they engage with the world beyond SCHS. We want our school to be a place where people feel welcomed, included and encouraged to contribute.
We also reflected on the importance of developing well-rounded young people. SCHS values personal growth alongside learning, encouraging students to challenge themselves, discover their strengths and interests, and develop confidence in who they are. There was a strong sense that school should help students better understand both themselves and the world around them.
Finally, the process highlighted the importance of initiative and courage within our school culture. SCHS students are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, embrace challenges and take opportunities, understanding that growth often comes through persistence, resilience and a willingness to try something new.
Together, these ideas helped shape our thinking about what a SCHS motto should represent and the message we want it to carry into the future.
Throughout the process, many possible mottos were explored, discussed and debated. Suggestions such as Limitless Paths – One Vision, By Will We Prevail, Lead With Curiosity and Fuelling Dreams, Forging Futures each brought interesting ideas and generated thoughtful conversation. However, as a group, we were very conscious that we were not simply looking for a slogan that sounded impressive or catchy. We wanted a motto with genuine meaning — something authentic that truly reflects the values, culture and aspirations of SCHS.
This meant carefully considering not just how a motto sounded, but what it communicated about our community and whether it would continue to resonate with students and staff into the future. While many of the proposed mottos had strengths, some were ultimately set aside because they did not fully capture the sense of belonging, growth, courage and community that we believe defines SCHS.
We are now entering the final stages of finalising the SCHS motto, and I am excited to share that it will officially be launched at the beginning of Term 3.
