Text Studies - Sunday Chutney

This fortnight, students have enjoyed exploring the stories Elmer’s Special Day and Sunday Chutney. Through reading, discussion and writing activities, students learnt about the important parts of a story, including the characters, setting, problem, solution and key events. We practised retelling stories in our own words and explaining how characters solved problems.

Students investigated what makes people unique by identifying character traits and making connections between the characters and themselves. We discussed how characters think, feel and act, and used new vocabulary to describe their personalities and strengths.

A highlight of our learning was sharing our own experiences and making text-to-self connections. Students reflected on times they felt included or excluded, discussed how they solved problems, and wrote about their ideas using sentence starters and their growing phonics knowledge. It has been wonderful to see students building confidence as readers, writers and communicators while sharing their thoughts and learning from one another.

S.W.P.B.S - School Wide Positive Behaviour

This fortnight, students have been learning strategies to help them stay calm and positive when plans change. We explored how showing Resilience, Respect and Self-Belief helps us adapt to unexpected situations and continue learning successfully.

Students learnt and practised our CALM strategy:

🧘 C – Calm body👂 A – Accept the change🗣️ L – Use positive self-talk🚶 M – Move on positively

Through hands-on activities such as the Change Tower Challenge, students experienced changes to tasks and practised using positive self-talk, flexible thinking and problem-solving skills. Throughout the day, students also took part in surprise Mystery Change Challenges, where they demonstrated their ability to adapt, stay calm and keep learning when routines or plans changed.

Respectful Relationships

Students have been learning how to work together to solve problems. Through a variety of puzzle challenges, students practised listening to others, sharing ideas, taking turns and including everyone in their group.

As they worked collaboratively, students learnt that teamwork, communication and flexibility help us solve problems more successfully. It was wonderful to see students supporting one another, celebrating successes and learning that we can often achieve more when we work together.
