Career Pathway Spotlight: School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships

Leighland Christian School has a long history of working with students to discover a career pathway that fits with their goals, skills and interests. A great way for students to gain confidence and competence for their life in the real world is to develop practical skills for the workplace through a School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship

Key features of a School-Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship (SBT) for consideration:

  • Students are required to attend school and work toward their Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE).

  • SBT’s require a host employer which will require a job application and interview, as it is an employment arrangement.

  • A Tasmanian school-based apprenticeship or traineeship allows students to engage in paid work for a minimum of 7.5 hours or a maximum of 15 hours per week under a workplace agreement. This can be one or two days at work in school time or after school hours/weekend, which is determined through negotiation with the host employer.  There may be an expectation that the student will work additional hours in term breaks. Students are paid for any training in the workplace or off-site.

  • A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship offers flexibility. It enables a student in Years 10, 11 and 12 to combine school, work and training to achieve a nationally recognised qualification, often referred to ‘Earn while you Learn'

  • Students are required to commit to the full term of the training contract which means attending school and work days for the duration of the signed contract. School attendance is an essential part of the contract requirements.

At Leighland Christian School, each child’s giftings, interests and competencies are valued by educators and career advisors who are committed to working with students and parents toward successful transitions of students into the world of work and/or further education.

How to secure a School based Traineeship or Apprenticeship?

  • Employment service providers liaise with industry on a regular basis and often have information on available SBT opportunities which they pass onto school careers advisors.

  • Work experience with an employer of choice is an excellent way to explore the possibility of a SBT, which can then be discussed with the school’s careers advisors to facilitate.

  • Family connections, social networks and industry associations are very helpful to explore potential host employer opportunities.

There are more than 140 approved qualifications registered with Skills Tasmania to choose from in Tasmania! Our committed career advisors can assist parents and students to explore pathways into trade and other vocational careers giving students a head start in their chosen career.
