Learning Space News

Year 5/6

English

This term, students have explored historical fiction texts connected to our Gold Rush Inquiry, including ‘1845, Do You Dare? Eureka Boys’ by Penny Matthews and ‘The Night They Stormed Eureka’ by Jackie French. Through these texts, students have developed their reading comprehension skills by analysing characters, making inferences, identifying key events and exploring historical perspectives through diary entries, letters and other forms of autobiographical writing.

Students have also participated in our weekly Book Club program, working collaboratively in self-selected groups to read and respond to a shared text. Each week, students have completed discussion and comprehension tasks before presenting their learning to the whole group through a collaborative slideshow.

Maths

Students have been developing their understanding of fractions and space. In fractions, students are exploring how to represent, compare, and order fractions, as well as understanding the relationship between parts and wholes. They are using visual models, number lines, and practical tasks to build a strong conceptual understanding. In the Space unit, students have been investigating shapes, their properties, and how they can be described, constructed, and represented. Through hands-on activities, students are developing their spatial reasoning skills by exploring angles, symmetry, and the features of both two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects.

Inquiry

Students have been working collaboratively in groups to research the Gold Rush era and linking what they have learned from the Sovereign Hill camp experience. Students are exploring significant events, influential figures, and daily life during this historical period, and will showcase their understanding through creative projects such as dioramas, posters, and visual presentations as they prepare for the Inquiry Expo at the end of term.

The Term 2 ‘Living Museum Expo’ will be held on Wednesday 24th June.

While the Year 6 students have been competing, Year 5 students have been engaged in their exciting Planet Project. Students have designed their own planets and transformed them into unique holiday destinations, considering elements such as accommodation, transport, attractions, culture and cuisine. The project has encouraged creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving through a range of imaginative and engaging tasks.
