Music News

Our Music students have as usual been busy preparing music ready for performances.

On July 20, Hannah (Year 10) and I were invited to play saxophone at a local childcare centre in Mitcham, called Gloryland Early Learning. The children ranged in age from infants to 4-year-olds, so we went around to each room and played a variety of songs suitable for each age group. Some of these songs included, ‘If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands’, ‘Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’, ‘A Whole New World’ and ‘Let it Go’.  We also encouraged the children’s curiosity and allowed them to touch the instrument and help us play some notes by pressing different buttons while we blew air.

For the older children, we explained a little bit about the history and structure of the saxophone, and answered all of their questions - it was great that they were so interactive.

Overall, the teachers and children were excited to have us there and they had fun singing along and doing actions to the songs. Hannah and I enjoyed getting to play familiar childhood songs we haven’t heard in a while, and it was very cool that we were able to introduce the children to a way of playing music that they had never seen before.

Meanwhile, year 7 classes are busy preparing their class songs. Each class has chosen a different piece of music to rehearse and perform. Students have chosen what instrument they want to play in the class. Some have chosen the instrument they have lessons on which adds to the classroom instruments of Guitar, Bass Guitar, Keyboard, Drums, Percussion and singing. It’s great to see everyone working hard to master their individual part and then work as a team to pull the music together. We can report that already all the class pieces are easily recognisable, and everyone is having a great time!

In Instrumental Music, our amazing Performing Arts Captains, Tynan, Sophie, KayLi, Vanessa, Lucy and Scarlett are working phenomenally hard to pull together an amazing theme concert for all the Mullauna community to enjoy. The music staff are very impressed with the dedicated and mature approach these leading students have shown to this important concert on 11 September at 7:00 pm.

As the various ensembles work on their performance pieces, the sound of music from all around the world can be heard at the music centre and beyond, from 7:30am to 5:00pm. It’s all coming together!
