Helen Bowker

August 2023

Introducing Helen Bowker as the Inclusion Leader.

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

Actually, I’m not a teacher, I am the Inclusion Leader. This is a new role at Mullauna and means that I work as part of the student services team. I decided to work in education because I wanted to be a part of supporting young people to be the best they can.

How long have you been in the teaching game?

I have been working in an education setting for 8 years.

What was your last place of employment - school/university or another organisation?

Vermont Secondary College.

What do you love most about your job?

I am passionate about helping students who learn differently realise their potential.  We are all different and we all have strengths.

What has been one of your best 'education' moments?

I don’t think there is just one moment. Today, a Mullauna student who is friends with a student I worked with at Vermont, told me her friend misses me and she now wants to move to Mullauna. That was nice to hear.

What would be 3 things that you would like your students to know about you?

  1. I have 3 children (all girls) and 2 dogs. A golden retriever (Bailey) and a Labradoodle (Frankie).
  2. My favourite food is generally Asian. Vietnamese, Japanese or Thai. YUM!
  3. I love the beach. It is my happy place.

Where is your favourite holiday destination?

So many, I just love holidays! My last overseas trip was Vietnam and I absolutely loved it.  Pretty much anywhere in Queensland, especially Palm Cove. Next holidays I am going on a mini break to the Blue Mountains which I am excited about because I haven’t been there before.

What TV show/series did you last binge watch?

Love Me Season 2. I love to watch Australian content. Colin from Accounts was lots of fun as well.

If you could wear Harry’s invisibility cloak for one day, where would you go and what would you do? That’s Harry Potter’s cloak not Harry Ruff’s cloak 😊

I would probably head off on a plane to Queensland and soak up some sun. Sensibly of course with sunscreen.

What is the one piece of ‘advice’ or the one thing that you always say to your students?

Breathe!

Thank you, and welcome to Mullauna College, Helen!
