Leaving a Legacy

On the 6th of August, Beaufort Secondary College students competed in the Legacy Public Speaking Competition, held in Ararat. Our speakers were, Baxter White, Harvey Grant and myself. The audience was made up of a mixture of students from other schools and Hank Graham and Alex Porter from BSC.

The day began with a 30-minute bus trip to Ararat, where we arrived around 9:30am. Upon arrival, we were welcomed into the theatre by Legatee Radford, who organised the event.

Students dropped their bags and started reading over their speeches in the meeting room across from the theatre, where we were then cued in to begin speaking. Harvey was the second speaker, while I followed immediately after. Last to speak was Baxter, who finished strongly.

After we finished our prepared speeches, we moved on to our impromptu speeches. We had five minutes to jot down some dot points on the topic "What would you do if you had five minutes of fame?" It was very challenging to present on an unknown topic as five minutes is not long to plan, although Beaufort finished strong and left a good impression on the audience.

Once we had finished the impromptu speeches, we enjoyed a lovely lunch, prepared by the Legacy volunteers and waited while the results were finalised. They began by announcing the runner-up, which turned out to be me! I won a cash prize of $50 as well as being afforded the opportunity to attend State Finals. First place was a tie, with our very own Baxter White, who won a $75 cash prize and also has the opportunity to attend the State Finals.

Overall, it was a very successful day for the Beaufort team and to celebrate our success, Mrs Doyle shouted us each an ice-cream before we headed back to school.
