Well done on making it to the halfway point of term! A special thank you to our Wellbeing Officers, Hamish and Cass Roberts for preparing a pancake breakfast that was enjoyed by our Year 12 students last Friday.
A big thank you to James Craig who ran a session for our VCE students on how to prepare to be “better than average” in their VCE English Exam and create “surprises and wake the examiners up”. This was a fantastic presentation for the students. James has summarised for us some key strategies for preparing for your exam:
- Read and know the book.
- There are no surprises in exams – check past exams as much as possible.
- Plan a lot and in detail to avoid surprises.
- Write a little bit and often.
- Answer the question but never fully agree or disagree with the prompt.
- Use different evidence to other students - stop googling “station eleven good quotes”.
- Expand your evidence – metalanguage, structure, symbols, characters arcs and setting eg: “evident in wearing Annette’s scarf”.
- Clarity is the first principal – don’t get lost in the wordiness – use the most accurate word.
- The “Miranda” rule – don’t shy aware from the complicated characters. Write about Miranda.
- Remember the audience
- Reference the audience constantly
- Enlarge your emotional vocabulary – more than happy, sad, angry, surprised, fear and disgust.
- Ask yourself what is the text type.
- Write longer essays – aim for 4 body paragraphs.
- Use your teachers for assistance – book 1-1 meetings when you can.
